Breakdown:
I started studying... during the last week of september and all the way until yesterday 🙂 I've also used ANKI extensively since day ONE!
BIO:
Materials Used: Cliff's AP; Barron's AP; DAT Destroyer; Schaum's Outline; Campbell's 7th ED; ANKI (536 cards)
I've started studying for BIO first! I went through Cliff's 1x and then did destroyer 1x and never went back again. Then I read through Barron's, which I thought was really helpful actually even if you've gone through Cliff's. Its written differently and certain aspects are emphasized differently so you might pick up on something you've glazed over in Cliff's (I really liked Barron's taxonomy section). I also proceeded to read through campbells but I couldn't read, read it! I read really fast through the first 500 pages or so and then gave up. I then proceeded to read through all of Schaum's BIO outline. Just for your information... the two weeks leading up to my test were ALL BIO studying plus doing practice tests every other day. I'm also a developmental genetics BIO major...
During the Test:
This section is very basic and yeah it was as random as everyone says... I thought it wasn't too bad though but I did have around 14 questions marked initially. I had about 3 taxonomy questions but no plants! There were 2 ecology questions though. I also had one question that just made my eyes pop out, you would NEVER guess what it was LOL. Bodybuilders... that's right! That's not a typo! =_= I'm pretty sure I got that one wrong because I figured out the answer during my break ): I also thought that quite a few of the questions... about ~5 or so would've been pretty TOUGH unless you've taken animal development and cell biology. I knew the answers to them instantaneously because I've taken both classes. All in all... I thought this section was manageable! OHHHH also this is very important, there were about 2 questions which were kind of similar to some of the practice test questions so make sure you do all of them!
GC:
Materials used: Destroyer; TBR; ANKI (121 cards)
I'm actually pretty good at gen chem because I've read through TBR so many times... probably around 5-6 times? I thought destroyer wasn't hard at all when I was going through it the first time. I was debating about whether or not I should buy CHAD but I decided not to since I would definitely NOT be missing out on anything with TBR. If anything, its more than what I actually need to know. I definitely recommend TBR for gen chem. I know its pricey so I would recommend CHAD but if you have a MCAT buddy who is done with theirs, definitely steal it for a week to read through it. You will feel ENLIGHTENED reading this book. Destroyer is also a MUST! It gets your brain clicking whenever you see calculations and it'll definitely land you a couple points higher. I went through destroyer about 3.5x!
During the Test:
I thought I was pretty well prepared for this section but I did have about like 4~ or so marked. I felt that it was actually slightly harder than topscore? There were less calculations and a lot more conceptual questions. I believe there were about 5-6 calculations... My topscore GC scores were mostly due to carelessness... for example... TS3 GC... I got 1 wrong and it was about electron configuration! 383439847FHSDFKSDJF. TBR prepares you very well conceptually for this! I actually thought I would've scored a 20 or so on this section. I was uncertain of a couple of problems while on topscore I've never had that feeling of uncertainty. Actually I think most of my GC careless errors were due to the fact that I would take my practice test starting at like 9pm lol? I was really gunning for a 30 here but I knew it wouldn't happen after I went through it ):
OC:
Materials used: Destroyer; TBR; ANKI (178 roadmap cards + 151 ochem cards)
Let me tell you how I studied for this! I also forgot to mention that I used KBB but it was utter and complete useless cr@p. The GC was way too sparse and OC does not even explain nor help solidify any concepts or reactions into your head. I started glazing through half of OC in KBB and gave up because nothing stuck. I went straight to destroyer. Opened it up. Carried it. Walked over to my scanner and scanned all those bad boy reactions. I ANKI'ed every single reaction and after 3 days of memorizing. I started on destroyer 🙂 I went through destroyer about 4x. Destroyer is VERY good for OC!!! Highly highly recommended. Also, if you need help conceptually I recommend TBR for OC. Its an A+ resource. The thing is... OC use to be a blur for me but eventually I realized that OC is actually not very scary. It actually requires a VERY solid background in GC. Once you have GC nailed... OC will come very easily and most importantly LOGICALLY!
During the Test:
Hmm... I thought this section was on par with Topscore difficulty wise... but maybe ever so slightly harder since I didn't get too many reactions. I was very sad to be quite honest... because there were about 5-6 reactions. I KNOW I had about 2-3 lab technique questions but they were pretty simple I believe. Know your SN/E; stereochemistry! the diastereomers and etc. I also had one carbohydrate question to which I SWEAR had to be an error on the test =\ It was illogical! You can see that OC was one of my strongest sections on my topscores 🙂 I was gunning for a 30 on this too! I thought OC was slightly easier than the GC section with BIo being the hardest due to randomness. Seriously bodybuilding... I didn't mark too many on this probably 2-3 max.
PAT:
Materials used: CDP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just studied for this with the 10 test version of CDP and I have to say it was a fabulous resource! For the curious mind, these were my CDP scores:
18/22/18/18/23/23/21/22/22/24
They averaged out to be a 21. I was pretty much freaking out on PAT because my very first test... I gave myself 90 mins and I still hit a 18 but by the end of it I developed my own strategies and it became a LOT easier. I didn't really do too much extra for PAT. I basically just took one every 2-3 days or something like that and then did more practice using the practice tests. I have to say... the KBB PAT is loopey. I felt that something was off about it =\
During the Test:
Keyholes: I thought this was a lot easier than topscore! It was also MUCH better quality. Topscore quality can go **** my basketballs~ Har Har. CDP was more representative of this than topscore was. I spent about 10 mins on this.
T/F/E: When I first started out... T/F/E was crazy hard for me but I started getting REALLY good at this. I score no less than 13 on any CDP towards the end but more often than not 14/15s. I don't use any line counting. I actually just stare at the two views for about 10 seconds and then start eliminating OBVIOUS wrong answer choices. Usually you can cut two out easily. Then you just compare the last two! I thought this was actually easier than CDP! I spent about 10 mins on this!
Angles: My CDP angles went all over the place... from a 7 to a 13 like WTH? I think the angle god decided to bless me today and coincidentally had diarrhea so he was in the bathroom and couldn't turn off the blessings.. otherwise I would've never ended up with a 24 on the PAT LOL! I really think angles is kind of meh... you get lucky sometimes and soemtimes not... There were a couple of really easy ones and some indistinguishable ones kind of like on CDP. I felt that CDP difficulty varied. Some where easy and some where not. Can't really say much about angles. Used about 5 mins.
Cube Counting: This section is easy... I would say that its easier than CDP. Just make sure you count correctly and use a table!
Hole punching: The holes are a lot smaller than CDP so it makes it somewhat more difficult I suppose? I think CDP needs to switch to smaller holes to make it more representative ): Not too many out of the ordinary folds. You should be sufficiently prepared with CDP. I used the 4x4 grid method. During my last 2-3 mins of my sciences section, I drew about 15 boxes all in 4x4 lol.... I didn't use all the boxes though because some of them were EASY! I swear there were like 2 repeat questions that I had in here HAHAHA!
Pattern folding: It was somewhat different than CDP I suppose. There weren't as many of those weird shading ones that CDP likes to drill you on. And yes.. I got one pattern fold that I had NO ********* idea on how it would even fold. Absolutely NO idea. Not even a hint of how it would end up. It was not because of shading. It was not because of those weird lines on faces. I don't know how specific I'm allowed to be on describing this? But I really really had no idea how it would even fold... I was doing pretty well on the CDP on folds too, a lot of times close to perfect! Anyway... be careful. Oh yes, there was this one other figure which, CDP didn't have anything close to it either =\ but it was not as crazy as the one I'm describing up above after I figured it out 🙂 I used a lot of time for this...
RC:
Materials used: Only the ones that came with practice tests!
I didn't study for this at all until I started doing practice tests. I got a 21 on the free sample test one and a 22 on the KBB. When I took topscore I got a 29, then a 25, then a 27. I was like whoa... no need to study for this LOL. I'm not good at reading or anything either. I can NEVER get higher than a B in any writing class so go figure. My statetegy is to actually look at the first question and then start reading... If I don't find it within the first 2-3 paragraphs then I look at the next question and continue reading. Once I'm done then I just do pure SnD. I don't really see what's the issue with reading the passages? I read it and SnD and I still finish each section in about 15mins... I used the extra time to look over the tone/inference questions.
I have to say that topscore was not representative in that it did not have any tone/inferences, which is probably why I scored super high on it lol? My passages were bone fractures, antibiotics, and herbal medicine. I didn't get piano'ed but I had about 10 or more tone/inference questions. You can kind of tell because I scored a lot lower than I usually would ): Overall it was pretty manageable I guess!
QR:
Materials used: MATH DESTROYER!!!!!!!!!!; Initial read through KBB; also special mention to khan academy for ellipses! ANKI (67 cards)
Please please please get math destroyer. This thing saved my butt. I knew nothing about math because I was a bio major and haven't crunched numbers in forever... I went through math destroyer once and also did the practice in back of destroyer. I didn't do math destroyer test #11 though because it was extremely hard for some reason? I don't know why but it was a lot harder than the other 10 tests... I felt that if you can understand everything in math destroyer and do everything in topscore you should be aaaaaaOKAY!
During the test:
I actually felt that math destroyer was HARDER than the actual test. More often than not... I would run out of time going through math destroyer. I was also pretty tight on time for topscore... but during the actual test... I finished 8 mins ahead of time. The test is about speed... I had quite a few word problems but they are easy to dissect. Don't be intimidated. I had one really long word problem and I had to reread it 4-5x actually lol... Know your identities! I had one straight out identity problem asking which was incorrect lol~ Know your conversions! I had one problem on conversions. Also had some weird graph kind of like the standard dev graph but it was asking something different... so you people might want to look into that. All in all... it was pretty manageable.
I have to say that THE most valuable resource was definitely... drum roll! ANKI! I started utilizing it from DAY ONE and I think it saved my life... I don't think I would've remembered as much if it weren't for it. I started studying BIO first so I can anki everything I didn't know. I then went on to OC so I can start anki'ing the destroyer ochem reactions. Sadly... I didn't get too many reactions on my exam ): but I don't think that is any reason to skimp out on memorizing the road maps. Please memorize road maps.
Practice Tests!
I am against doing the kaplan PATs... the online one from the book and the one in the book. I felt that it kind of threw off my mojo, which is why I kind of skip them... Also felt that the real dat's PAT was easier than the topscore PAT, at least keyholes,T/F/E, hole punching, cube counting. The pattern folding was kind of out of this world on my test today though ): Most of it was ok but I swear... that one folding question had to have been a mega bell curve decider or something. I felt that the natural sciences were easier on topscore but somehow I didn't do too shabby on the real deal! Also... maybe topscore 3 is the easiest one since I scored absurdly high on it and was jumping around the day afterwards >_> Topscore 1+2 were more representative but still slightly easier than the real test. I think test 3 was meant to be some sort of a 'confidence' boost. But yes, I definitely DO RECOMMEND TOPSCORE! Please take it to work on your timing and also see where you stand. As you can see, you'll probably score a couple more points on the real thing than on topscore! I also did each topscore while sitting through the whole thing. I did not split it up or anything. I took it full head on!

All in all... I think I've spent more time studying for BIO than all the other 5 sections combined. sigh; Also, right after I finished my last QR question and I clicked ok. My adrenaline start pumping like CRAZY thinking my scores were going to pop out. There was this brief waiting moment and I can see the computer clicking... probably calculating my score while my heart was racing even faster. BAM! It pops up on the screen... So what did you think of your prometric experience? Very satisfied? Satisfied? Undecided? etc... I was like =___________________= By the time it got to the actual scores my excitement already leveled off somewhat! Nonetheless I was still shaking like the energizer bunny once I was done. I was dropping my credit card and ID card all over the place when I walked out. The lady outside said I had nice scores!
