I am currently in highschool, I know i may be a bit too young to think about this but I want to be prepared for the DATS when it's time. I'm going into my senior year and I am currently taking college classes as well (at a Community college). I wanted to know if, on the DATs, calculus was essential. I finished a Calculus 1 course (although i didn't quite learn it that well) with an "A", and I wasn't sure if I should take Calc 2 or even 3. I am hoping to save the sciences for when i go to college (hopefully NYU) that way i actually get a better understanding of the subject. So what would anyone recommend as far as classes go... what are the requirements for dental schools and what actually comes on the DATs?

There is no calc at all on the DAT. I don't believe there are any dental schools that even require calculus... there may be a few that recommend it. You only need a pre-calc understanding of math to do well on the DAT QR section. However, the QR section is one of the hardest ones because the time limit is a killer and you can't spend too long on any one problem.

Harsh, but funny.

Title of this thread is DAT's, and the question is about which school is best: NYU, Columbia, Penn, OR the other 40 or so schools in the country.

Calculus isn't required for the DAT, but there are few schools (only Harvard comes to mind) that require it as a prerequisite. If you major in Biology you'll probably encounter all of the prereqs you need without thinking about it much. Every school has different requirements, so refer to the web pages of the schools in which you are interested. There are many other excellent dental schools around the country, so maybe do a little more research into what those "other" schools are.

Some schools definitely require 1 semester. BU requires 2 semesters of calc. Only a couple others require 2, but I can't remember which ones they are off the top of my head.

I took Calc 1-3 as an undergrad just for the heck of it because I liked math. It actually backfired because I didn't do so hot in Calc 3. I wouldn't recommend it. Although, I did find Calc 2 easier than 1.
