Hey guys, this is my first post :-D. Here's my situation. I have been accepted to the two-year pre-pharmacy program at UMCP as well as the 2+4 Pharm D. program at Rutgers University. I have heard that many people who choose to study the two-year pre-pharmacy at a regular college have hard time getting in to professional pharmacy schools. I had a friend who studied pre-pharmacy at UMBC and he had to wait 2 years before he was finally accepted into a professional pharmacy school. I wouldn't say he's stupid or anything, he's a very hardworking person. And for Rutgers, I could finish my pre-pharmacy in 2 years and professional pharmacy in 4 years all in Rutgers and getting my Pharm D degree without having to worry about transfering to other schools. So is it better for me to go to UMCP and then challenge my future, or choose the safer way to Rutgers and be done with it in 6 years? If you have a simliar experience like the one my friend had, please be kind enough to share. Thanks guys.

Rutgers is an excellent school. You would be challenged there all 6 years.

Def agree, if it was me i'd go to rutgers.

I'd say your friend had a streak of bad luck. I'd say that most people on here do their pre-reqs and pharmd at different schools. Since your already in at Rutgers I'd consider going there. Its a good school, and you'd save yourself the "fun" of applying to pharmd programs.

I was in this same predicament 2 years ago, I now attend College Park which is a great great great school...and Im applying to Pharmacy school now. I really wish I had gone to 2+4 at Rutgers which I got into along with 6 yr programs at USP and UPitt, because it willl make your life soooo much easier if you KNOW thats what you want to do. YOU won't have to worry about the PCAT and applying.....and you would save yourself sooo much stresss down the road. Pre-Pharmacy is not a real major at UMCP so you would have to choose a Life Sciences major and believe me, your GPA will most like suck. Also most advisors dont really know much about Pharmacy so your kind of on your own, all you will get is constant pushing into doing research (we're big on that) and going to medical school. I am now STILL waiting and agonizing over what I will be doing next semester-whether I will get into school....trust me hunny, if your sure pharmacy is for you...go to Rutgers....One more thing, to emphasize how on your own you really are, the only pharmacy school in MD is University of Maryland Baltimore which is relatively impossible to get into. There is no guarantee for UMCP students or even in state students. Prepharm advising at CP is geared towards eventually getting into UMB but they seem not to know much about it...90% of the ppl who apply to UMB from college park do not get in. I have a friend with 97% and like 3.8 GPA who did not get in. I didnt get in either...in conclusion, please please pleaseeeeee do not make the same mistake I did (well its not really a HUGE mistake because I love college park...being a Terp is awesome) but if you really want clarity and less stress in your life...do a 6 yr program. ONLY if you are positive that pharmacy is what you want to do.
Good luck in your decision
:luck:
