I got an invite to DCOM. I live in ny, i need help with travel plans and also if there's anyone interviewing there this month..let's share some ideas to get there.

I interviewed there on the 6th and also live in NY. I drove and I would advise you to fly if you can because it was a REALLY long drive. It took us about 16 hours from the Albany area. The plane tickets were way too expensive so we had to drive. I think that you can get a flight into Knoxville which is the closest airport. I think it is about an hour and a half drive from there, so you would have to rent a car. Amtrak is not an option because there are no train stations within 3-4 hours. I also looked a bus and they also only go into Knoxville. Harrogate is really rural so unless you drive the closest you will get is Knoxville. Good luck!

hey that was a great advice, i def dont intend on driving. Can you tell me about your interviewing experience there? Also where do you rank DCOM on your list of osteopathic schools you wanna attend?

It is actually one of my top choices. I really want to do rural family medicine and I think it would also be really cool to be in the first class at a school. I actually prefer DCOM over NYCOM or some others schools that are closer because I don't really want to live in a city. It really is a matter of preference and what you want to do with your life. Of course, I would be happy to go anywhere.
It was my first interview, so I have nothing to compare it with, but I was really suprised at how friendly and down-to-earth everyone was. They allow a half hour for the personal interview, but no one took that long. Most of the day was spent going over the specifics of the school and meeting some faculty. Everyone was really organized and the building is going to be state of the art. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Good luck with everything!

🙂 You are really helpful doctormom, i am about to schedule an interview this month and looking forward to get to know more about this school . In my mind, the path one takes through medical school is all up in the air, right now iam just focused on getting to med school. So yeaa, i care less about schools preferences for certain field of medicine.

You're very welcome for the help! I totally agree. I just want to get into one medical school and it doesn't really matter which. Obviously it would be great to get into one of my top choices, but I will settle for anything and figure the rest out later.😀

Lamborghini, I live about 30 min. from DCOM, and grew up in this area. If I can be of assistance to you or anyone let me know.

I am leaving now to drive down for myinterview tomorrow. I will let you all know how it goes.

be my guest organic, i wanna know everything and anything you can tell me about the school, it's affiliations ..in general how would you rate your living enviroment there in comparison to other small towns?

Hey,

Did you have your interview at DCOM already? I'm from PA and transportation is frustrating me. I'm flying to the Tyson airport, and I guess I have to rent-a-car, but I don't want to drive by myself. What did you do?

I took a car out of the tyson airport and drove straight to my hotel..which was 5 mins away from the school. It worked out pretty well..only thing i wish was that my flights didnt get delayed..coz i ended up reaching the hotel at 2.30am in the morning..with an interview at 8.45 am. So plan ahead and be ready for a crappy flight schedule to knoxville!

I will be there on Dec 8th. Anybody else interviewing on this day?

You should try to interview on the 1st, so we can carpool!

Anyone interviewing on Dec. 1 (and staying at the Holiday Inn)...please let me know!

I still need to make reservations, where would be the best? Inn in KY?
To tell you the truth, I am a bit scared to drive by myself there, its going to be December, and I am not used to driving on any road conditions except those that you get in dry,dry desert of Arizona.🙂 I have to call tomorrow to arange for rent-a car, and make reservation somewhere. So exciting...

The weather should be fine because they don't get that much snow there and it is only December. There are a lot of mountains though so some of the roads are winding. I am sure it will be fine though. There is the Holiday Inn and the Best Western in Middlesboro and the Cumberland Gap Inn which I think is in Tazewell. I think they are all priced about the same, the same distance from the school, and probably all fine. The school recommends the Holiday Inn and when you call them make sure you tell you are making a reservation to interview at DCOM because they are holding rooms and offering a discount. Good luck with your interview! You will love it there!:luck: :luck: :luck:

I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents for you guys. I'm from California so I had to actually do a connection before I could reach Tys airport. I came with my father which was such a help because Tennessee is completely different from California. The drive was about 1.5-2 hours from the airport to the hotel/school. But unlike a state like California, there was like no traffic so getting there was a breeze, as long as you knew which freeweay to take and when. I would advise you all to go to AAA and get a triptix. It would be easy to get lost if you don't take the right freeway at the right time. I heard at my interview that they were going to start a shuttle service between the hotel and the school. If any of you are interested, you guys can look into that as well. I interviewed at several other places and I felt that this school was one of the best schools out there. It is rural but it is so beautiful and there are so many outdoor trails you can take, and things you can do in the outdoors. It was a refreshing change from the smog, the traffic, the congestion and overall crowdedness that I find in California. And in addition, that school is going to be so high tech. They are putting in the latest and greatest of everything. Also, the faculty are so nice and personable. My fellow students at the interview and I were talking to each other as if we had known each other for years. Good luck with everybody at the interview, I hope it goes well! :luck:

Everyone who interviews there has the same opinion you do, including myself! It is a great school. See you there in August!😀

From Nashville, is I-75 to Hwy. 63 the best way to get to Harrogate? It seems like they give different directions (Hwy. 33). Just wondered which route was better.

We should have plenty of time, so if one is more scenic than the other, I'd be happy to try it out.

I drove in from nashville too, it took about 5 hours if I remeber right. I followed the schools instructions to get there. But the lady at the hotel told us to drive back on the 75. It saved us a little bit of time but not much. The main difference is that 33 takes you through a bunch of little towns so the speed limit goes up and down a lot. 63 does the same thing but not as bad and then you can get on 75 and cruise. Both routes were really pretty so I don't think you miss much by going on the freeway instead. Good luck at the interview!

Thanks...it looked on the map like 33 might be more "intersting"...mountains, lakes, etc..
I'm very interested in seeing the lakes and rivers in the area as well as the surrounding towns. I have spent a little time in Oak Ridge, but that was years ago visiting family, etc..

I really am looking forward to this trip...I can't remember how mountainous that part of TN is...my hope is it's a little like the drive from Knoxville to Asheville, NC...I LOVE that area.

I remember seeing a lot of signs for marina's and lakes but we only saw one lake, the rest were hidden by all the trees and hills. I believe we followed the river for a while too. I've never been that far east so all the hills and trees blew me away. I'm used to lots of mountains with flat valleys in between so it was weird for me not to be able to see very far because of all the hills and trees. Very pretty though, I loved it!

Anybody else going to be there on January 9th?
