dds vs dmd

I'm a dumb med student who has never been able to figure out the difference between DDS and DMD. could you tell me the difference and whether it makes any difference (i.e. don't take your kid to a DMD, they don't know what they're doing etc)

The DMD is the more modern term since dentistry has evolved into a profession that involves the whole body in relation to dental health, instead of just focussing the degree on dental surgery, which is the Doctor of dental surgery degree.

That's not how it originated at all. Let me guess; Pitt awards a DMD, and you were told that story during orientation 🙄

Since you guys won't do a search:

"The DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) and DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine) are the same degrees. The difference is a matter of semantics. The majority of dental schools award the DDS degree; however, some award a DMD degree. The education and degrees are the same."

The only reason there is a DMD is because Harvard grants degrees in latin only and since DDS wasn't latin they made up DMD

Which also explains that the Bachelor of Arts in colleges is abbreviated as B.A but at Harvard it is A.B.

Still all of this because of that seems ludicrous.

You seem to have misunderstood my explanation here. The DDS does NOT just focus on dental surgery, therefore, yes, the DMD=DDS. BUT, the DMD was introduced to symbolize how the field has changed over the course of dental history. Therefore, some schools have opted for the name change, and some have not. And NO...Pitt did not tell us this, it's something I was told by a very credible source back home. But YES, Pitt does award a DMD, and damn good one. 😀

Your "very credible source" is very credibly incorrect here. The origins of the DMD have nothing to do with dentistry's evolution as a medical profession (the thing was born more than a century ago, for crying out loud), and everything to do with Harvard pussyfooting over Latin linguistic trivialities. Sorry, but there's just no other way to tell you.

but seriously, who cares if a school offers DDS or DMD because we all end up being able to do the same things.

You guys are all behind the times. All the modern schools award DMDs.

DDS degree holders are idiots who are incapable of practicing dentistry because of their ill-training.

Everybody knows this.

DDSs are equivalent to DOs
DMDs are equivalent to MDs

DMD are MUCH MUCH MUCH more superior!

DDS can't even prescribe drugs.

All DDS dental school have a much less admission statistics. Some don't even require DATs. Some say DDS schools are close to Chiro and Massage Therapist schools.

DMD rocks!

Yah-E is correct. Many students apply to DDS schools because they can't cut it at DMD schools.

Arizona is probably going to change their degree to the DMD degree, because DDS students are intellectually inferior to DMD students, and because DDS students are NOT allowed to give injections.

This means a lot of patients in a lot of pain.

I almost forgot! For a dental school to award a DMD degree, the school must donate/contribute minimum of $1.2 million annually to ADA.

While DDS dental schools only have to donate $5 per student attending to that specific school.

This is another HUGE difference between DDS and DMD.

As result, DMD are trained to make more $$$$. Much more than DDS students.

And of course, the DAT scores for DDS students are low (17-19 range), while DMD students have the high scores (20+).

But this point has been so thoroughly exhausted that anyone willing to do a ten-second search on this board can learn everything there is to know about the differences between the two dental degrees. It gets extremely tedious retreading the same material OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER; furthermore, the hyperbole in the posts about the DMD/DDS schools is pretty manifest. If you can't leverage even that much critical thinking, you probably don't have much business applying to doctoral programs in the first place.

I wouldn't presume to speak for Gavin or Andy, and y'all can crucify me if you want, but a lot of people here (and among aspiring doctors in general) are <em>way</em> too eager to believe anything they're told.

In fact, the state of California address all it's dentists as "DDS," just to make it simpler for their paperwork.
