HI I just wanted some input from the forum as to what their experiences have been in DMD vs DDS schools.

My understanding is the a DMD school has the basic foundation class throughout the four years and the DDS school has the foundation subjects in the first two years and clinical last two years.

Thanks!

There is absolutely no difference between the DMD or DDS.

DMD = Didn't Make Doctor

DDS = Doesn't Do S^&t

😀

Bottomline, whatever degree a school confers upon its graduates, they all have to pass the same national board, so the education is very similar

According to an OMFS resident (who has a DMD). The reason why some schools have DMD rather DDS is because of they way they write the degree in latin on the diplomas... Just what I heard.

Yeah Harvard invented the DMD degree because it fit better with the latin used on the diplomas versus the DDS that Boston started. Mainly a historical difference with no implications whatsoever today.

If I remember correctly, It was The University of Maryland that started the DDS and Harvard with the DMD.

Yes, you are correct. University of Maryland, Baltimore College of Dental Surgery was the first dental college and granted the first DDS degree 🙂

^^^This.

Harvard had traditionally only offered degrees in Latin. In order not to break this tradition, they invented, so to speak, DMD.

Oops, I stand corrected! Thanks for the correction 🙂

I'm getting my DMD and I also have 2 years of BMS courses up front, then clinical in the last two.

BTW, DMD FTMFW 😎
