I noticed that some school offer DDS program while others offer DMD program, rarely any school offer both. whaz the difference between them, or they are just the same thing? thanks

Once again, I'm compelled to ask:

Where, for the love of all that is good and holy, is the FAQ that was supposed to materialize so people can get answers to common questions, so we can avoid saying "there's no difference, Harvard just has a hard-on for naming its degrees in Latin," 5000 times?!

We now return you to your regularly scheduled SDNing.

That FAQ needs to be a STICKY NOW!!!

Definitely a good idea. As a newcomer, I'd be very grateful for the materialization of a FAQ Sticky.

No sticky needed!!! Because I am in the know, I can tell you that DDS is the real dental degree. DMD is more medical related.... which is what the DMD refers to. No, honest...

Yet, we don't discuss the fact that DDS can be translated into latin (chirurgae dentium doctoris) so there must have been an alterior motive.

It's all silly if you ask me.

it wasn't as easy to say or as catchy as Dentariae Medicinae Doctor...i think those harvard people just had too much time on their hands back then 😀

I personally don't feel that conveinience warrants the creation of a separate degree causing all this confusion. Harvard just wanted to be different, thats the bottom line.

How many pre-dents are going to sift through a FAQ sticky to find the answer to this question (when the FAQ is finally finished)? Can't we just have a sticky for now that says "DDS vs DMD - there is absolutely NO difference!"

I've seen this question asked more times in the last 2 months than in my 2 years on SDN.

I thought that's what the Search function was for: it's the sift-obsoletenator (I guess that's not a word 🙂). It's helped me lots of times, actually, and though one has to sift thru the results it's not as bad as sifting thru every post on the network. Hmmm... maybe to encourage ppl to dive into the sticky-thread (ewww; sticky thread? sounds like old floss...) with search function we'd mention it in the thread title? Search really works not-so-badly to my experience; just a matter of trying a few times to get the right wording.
