DEA Number Question

OK, I have couple of questions for you current residents about getting a DEA number:

1) Should I buy one now directly from DEA and use it throughout my residency or should I just use the DEA number issued to me by the teaching hospital during residency?

2) If I decide to purchase a DEA number, then will I be able to use that DEA number in the teaching hospital setting (do hospitals usually require House Staff/Officers/Residents to use hospital's DEA numbers only)? On the other side of the coin, if I decide to not purchase a DEA number and use the teaching hospital's DEA number, then am I able to use the teaching hospital's DEA number outside of the hospital when I "moonlight"?

To get your own DEA number (federal) you have to have a valid state control substance license and a license to practice in that state. You have to have a valid license in the state you are going to use that DEA number. Most programs won't flip for your DEA number so you will spend at least $780 dollars during your residency on your DEA license alone just to maintain it. Many guys find other ways outside of the hospital or just use the hospital DEA in the residency... my program pays for my state licenses and my DEA while I am in residency 🙂 lucky me....But they don't pay for my license in the other states where I also have a license 🙁

I'm in Louisiana, I have a fully activated Minnesota dental license (if I pass the WREB), even if I purchased a federal DEA number from DEA.org, I can't even use that DEA number while I'm in Louisiana because I don't have a full Louisiana dental license?

If that's the case, then screw it, I'll just use the DEA number that my hospital will provide me during my residency.

This is correct, or at least at university hosp of cleveland it is. If you want to moonlight, you must have your own DEA number associated with your own dental license. I just recently got my ohio dental license and dea #, and it didn't take very long at all. DEA # came in exactly 7 days.

Exactly, you have to have a Louisiana active dental license.
Otherwise for residency purposes the hospital issued DEA # will work fine.
Well, most of the time, coz some pharmacies will give u a hard time if ur prescribing for a Medicaid patient and they will want to know ur attending doctor's DEA # and Medicaid #.

Listen, Tool, you're going to get a restricted LA license unless you sit for the proprietary board in LA. You won't be eligible for your own DEA number valid in LA. Just use the institution's DEA number.
