Hello everyone. I wanted to ask you ideas for majors that would be the safest and easiest to apply fdor medical school. I was thinking biology, but that turned out to be a little too commonplace. Then I thought about biochem, but that is harder than biology. What do you think?

Do something you like. You major barely matters at all as long as you get good grades and take the prereqs.

Seriously, what the heck?

Major in something you like.

Hmmmm...I have been told that for ages. Won't a specific major increase my chances?

PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFT :meanie:

No. It won't. Unless your specific major leads to some REALLY AWESOME ECs (i.e. you major in music and use your skills to do music therapy, or you major in a foreign language and spend a term/summer in some extremely underprivileged/underserved region seeing firsthand how the other half lives), it doesn't matter. And even then, the major's just the gateway to those. And trust me - you have other ways in.

TL;DR: Major in whatever you like. It doesn't matter.

OK then...so how do medical admission officers look at your major. If I decide to major in underwater basket weaving, will it matter?

Agree 👍👍

I have a friend who first studied at friend's college's music conservatory, and then decided to go med (so just took the pre-reqs on top of the music degree). Friend was already pretty accomplished in a music career, so that was a nice unique EC friend just happened to have.

Friend really just didn't stress about details like what major is "BEST" -- friend ended up at top-ranked med school and top ranked residency.

Seriously OP. If you're just starting out, ask yourself you're going into medicine for the right reasons (not just money -- not just you, but everyone should ask themselves this) and get a bomb stellar GPA and MCAT.

Alright then.....is psych a safe major...b/c I love psych.

yep. this is a popular major for pre-meds and others.

If you love it, then it's likely safe ... only because you'll be motivated to STUDY !!!

Good luck young grass hopper

Major in Communications or Liberal Arts. It seems right for someone like you.

I hope it's not English cause you can't spell right.

It is a college major. Not a Saturday night date.

Ok, so Ragman, I've got these two chicks lined up for tonight, but I can't figure out which one to date. I mean, obviously this one's easy:

And this one's safe:

But what I'd really like is one that's EASY and SAFE. What should I do?!?

I think the safe one would be more fun and has big boobs

Major in an area that you like and that you are good at. Do not base your decision on whether the major will give you an advantage in getting into medical school.

You guys are hilarious.

Go with the one with fewer STDs, duh

But what if I wear a latex condom? I'm pretty sure I can use it right with my 40 MCAT score, right? I'm practically a doctor already. I deserve the best there is and will settle for nothing less.

It's the principles that matter.

[/sarcasm]

What do you mean by safe and easy? Are you looking for a major that is going to guarantee you acceptance? It doesn't exist. A non-science major could give you something extra to talk about in the interview and *may* show that you're 'diverse', but I wouldn't bank on that for getting in. Don't major in something just because you think it will increase your chances. Find out what you really like and study that. You'll be much happier and better off.

Major in pre-med with a minor in pre-anesthesiology.

I, for one, personally prefer a the Pre-Med Major with a double-concentration in MCAT Studies and Optometristry (or Dentistry -- both fields show a lot of promise for pre-med students these days). 🙄

But don't you want to go for the one that's dangerous and painful?? I think it will make your app more interesting..

Biomedical Engineering. Piece of cake major in which you can easily pull a 3.8 to 4.0 GPA without breaking a sweat.

Sociology. Why? It's easy to do well, and it applies to EVERYTHING. Other than that, you should pick something you like! Listen to the words of wisdom from some of the previous posters.
