Can anyone infrom me as to a decent, safe, and affordable neighborhood (resident salary) for my wife and I to live in Philly? Areas to avoid may also be helpful. Just incase I match I'd like to have an idea where to look.

My advice would be to speak with the current residents at the program you are interviewing with. Most times, they can give you the best info, especially with regards to salary, since you would be making the practically the same as them.

Good neighborhoods include:
1. Center City (especially Rittenhouse Square, though Washington Square is a less expensive alternative)
2. Olde City & surrounding areas like Society Hill and Queen Village
3. Art Museum district
4. Chestnut Hill in the suburbs

Manayunk and the surrounding suburbs are generally ok (though I personally wouldn't recommend Germantown) and somewhat cheaper.

North Philly, West Philly (outside the universities) and South Philly are better to avoid. But it's hard to make blanket statements because the good and bad areas in Philadelphia are pretty scattered and things can change in a matter of blocks.

Hope this helps!

[I liked Norristown/Germantown area you may be able to afford a condo I would buy if you are doing a 3-4 yr residency as you will get the $$ back for a house. Also NJ is an option as well Morestown.

Hi, I go to jeff and live just north of south street around 9th street...I share a beautiful 3 BR home (3 stories, kitchen, deck, living room, 2 bathrooms, etc) with 2 roomates for about $550/mo. (or 1650 overall). It's a nice area, Rittenhouse square (around 20th st.) tends to be a bit older proff crowd (meaning late 20's) but is definately nice but probably a bit more expensive. Hope this helps.

May also ck east falls/roxborough areas, 20/30 min from center city, much cheaper, easy commute w/ pub transportations, great places to eat...
Hope this helps.
