Is there a way your SO can come with you? If you want something competitive for residency Ohio State would be the better option. Being able to rotate in the same place (they're 3 separate hospitals but are connected) would save you time and they honestly are the best way to get research experience in Columbus.

Having done undergrad in upstate NY, I will confirm that northern NY and central OH are pretty equal when it comes to how cold it can get during the winter. Now, Buffalo get's more snow than Columbus (thanks, Lake Erie). But I obsess over weather. Disclosure: I'm on the WL for OSU, but please choose the school best for you. Both are very respectable institutions!
