I don’t know much about the individual schools, but I will say that I personally was between 2 schools with an $80k cost difference and chose the more expensive one due to location. Don’t underestimate the importance of location! It depends on what your priorities are, but if you wanna be closer to your support system, the extra $ might be worth it. And ease of matching back to CA is huge! I don’t think either school will close/open any doors based on prestige, but location does play a role in terms of matching.

Thank you! Location is really important to me so the extra debt really might be worth it

Don’t know much about Davis other than they have a pretty well known Ortho trauma program. But UMinn is a great place and Twin Cities are awesome (at least before 2020 riots).

There’s not a big difference in prestige between the two so matching a competitive specialty will be more on you than the school. Many match primary care at Davis due to personal desire since Davis selects for students like this, similar to UCSF, but it doesn’t mean you won’t have all the resources to match a competitive specialty if desired. Coupled with being closer to home, near family/support system, weather, etc. the cost difference is worth having loved ones nearby. Higher step scores don’t mean anything. Also pretty sure Davis is good with grading on curriculum, iirc they also abolished AOA? Check with current students.

Also, it seems you may want to match back to CA. do not underestimate how difficult this is, even with home ties to the state. Minnesota is not a strong enough school where I’d confidently say, yes you can match back wherever you want. In which case having geographical ties to the state during med school, networking with attendings in the area, plus your west coast physicians will know others in California better who can vouch for you, etc. will be a major bonus.
