I am currently attending community college, but I will transfer in the fall semester. I have 2 options at this point and I am conflicted.

School A
  • Small private liberal arts college (limited resources)
  • Would major in Chemistry
  • Would take 2 years to graduate
  • Less expensive
School B
  • Large public school
  • Would major in chemical engineering (my preferred major)
  • Would take 3 years to graduate
  • More expensive
It may seem that school A is the obvious choice; however, I really don't want to major in chemistry. I wanted to work for a few years after I graduate, but I don't think a chemistry degree will open up many doors. Plus, it is less interesting to me than engineering. What should I do?

Well, if you get a job as an engineer, you could very quickly recover the extra cost of attendance.

Don't get a major in something you're not interested in.

Are you sure you want to go to medical school? I'm not getting that vibe. Go major in chemical engineering. Work as an engineer. Live long and prosper. if at some point, you decide you want to go to medical school, you can take that road but its ok to decide that you like engineering more than medicine.

I do want to go into medicine. I just feel like this will be the best time to explore my interests outside of the field. I like engineering, but its not something I can picture myself doing in 20-30 years like medicine. That is why I applied to schools without engineering programs. At the end of the day my goal is to be a doctor. I am just unsure about which route to choose.

Chem eng gives you a backup if medical school doesn't work out. Chemistry is decent as well, but Chem eng has more job prospects. Ultimately, either program will be good. Go where you have greater opportunities available. A bit confused as to why the private is cheaper than the public, but I'm sure there's a reason behind that.

The private gave me an amazing scholarship that comes out to about half the tuition (super rare for transfer students). I would have to shoulder most of the cost at the public school.

Go to the school that you think you can do better in and will give you more opportunities in and out of school

Makes sense. Smaller school does have some advantages, but you are at a bit of a disadvantage if you decide down the road that med-school isn't right for you.
