Hi folks,

I have been really fortunate to be accepted to more than one MD/PhD program. I have developed really strong relationships with those programs (especially the directors and staff). I understand that I will have to end up picking only one offer. I understand that there might be people who are waiting to hear back from a school, so this is not the biggest problem in the world at the moment. I was wondering what the best way is to decline an offer? I just want to know so I will know when I have to make that decision come April.

Thanks!

also, I want to do some as soon as possible so that it could open up spots for other applicants.

You're way overthinking it. They know you have more than one acceptance and can only choose one. Nobody's going to be broken hearted that you're not coming to their program. Just send the email saying "thanks but no thanks" and move on.

Oooh! Rejection letters, I've read a lot of these, let me try!

Dear University,

I appreciated your offer of acceptance. This year I have received many offers from other highly qualified schools and due to AAMC limitations I may only pick one school. I regret to inform you that I must decline your offer of admission. Please do not consider this to be indicative of a lack of quality of your school, but rather a result of the competitiveness of the cerealscientist acceptance process. I wish you the best of luck in filling your class and hope that you'll consider me again when I apply for residency.

Sincerely,

cerealscientist

Or if OP prefers something more to the point:

Yeah unfortunately what's the point of sending that to a school that accepted you? That's like being mean to a new girlfriend because your old one left.

Does anyone know if there's a way to see (as applicants) if we are still holding waitlist places or acceptances at schools? I've decided which program I'll be attending, and I *think* I've withdrawn from everywhere else but I'm worried I've missed something.

Look in your sent folder (email) if you communicated to each of the programs who interviewed you. Then, look in your inbox folder for each the following terms: accept (ed, ance), alternate, wait (list, listed, -list), and reject (ion, ed). See if there is a communication from each program who interviewed you. If you don't see a communication, then send an email to that particular program declaring a withdrawal.

Thanks, I just was hoping that there was a system for applicants like there is for adcoms that would let me make sure that my communication has been processed.

That's a good idea; why isn't there an "applicant" portal on AMCAS where it would list all the accepted/withdrawn/rejected programs? That would be awesome!

I have the same worry. Seems like I have already withdrawn from all the schools I will not be attending.

What happens once May 15th rolls in and we accidentally forgot to withdraw from other schools. Do we loose our acceptance at the school we have decided on?

This is not that difficult to develop as we (Program Directors/Admin) provide a "status" to each applicant. For example, for our program all of our MD/PhD applicants currently are labeled as:
  • Accepted
  • Alternate
  • Rejected
  • Passive withdrawal (did not show up for interview, - for other programs, not completing secondary, etc.)
  • Withdrawn after acceptance
  • Withdrawn before acceptance

Your program director will contact you if you have a double acceptance. You could ask your program director via email if the see another acceptance.

Dear Dr. ...
I am looking forward to matriculate in your program. I believe that I have withdrawn from all other programs. Please let me know if your school acceptance report shows any current joint acceptances to contact them those programs.
Thanks,
