Hello. I was hoping someone could help me with this question. I have about 80k in student loans from undergrad/grad, about half of which is in unsubsidized Staffords. After being in repayment for several years, I am currently matriculated for four credits (A&P with lab) at a CC. I'd like to obtain an in-school deferment for my loans, but in order to be considered half-time, I need to be enrolled for six (never mind, that a science class with lab is the equivalent of 6 contact hours). Well, here's my question, if I sign up for another class, obtain a verification of enrollment, mail it in to direct loans, and then drop the extra class, will they be notified?

I can definitely take six credits next semester, but due to my work schedule, it'll be impossible for now. Has anyone faced this situation? Btw, I'm paying for this class out of pocket. (I do know that Direct Loans is notified if you drop below half-time if you took out a loan that same semester). Thanks for your help!

As soon as you drop below half-time they will report it to Department of Education who will then contact your lender. You may get away with it for a few months but it will likely evenutally catch up to you.
