Deferment and Perkins

I know deferment (as we once knew it) is gone for Stafford loans, but is the same true for Perkins? Are we able to defer (meaning no interest accrues) while we're in residency, since we're paying back the institution that gave us the Perkins? Has anyone tried to get deferment on their Perkins in the last year?
