i suppose it would all depend on how much tuition we're talking about. you say a private school, so i don't know. at my school, the program is $30k, so break that down to about $10k a year... no, i personally wouldn't in MY situation. when i consider that i'd be making 5-6x that amount my first year out and would be in the field a year sooner than i would if did do it, i'm looking at net profit. but, i don't know how much money you're making at your current job.. so it's all relative. i'd sit down and do the math and see. the only situation i've ever heard of regarding a school offering deferment, though, was when they were legally bound to do so.. i.e. accepted individuals getting deployed to iraq. that's the only situation i've heard of, personally.

those attending OT/PT/SLP programs at NYU and Columbia around 1997 to at least 2000 were offered tuition in exchange for working a certian amount of years at the NY dept of Ed schools. (i'm sure it was offered before and after those dates, but hey that's all i can guarantee..that's when I was paying attention to this.)

there are quite a few programs that offer tuition reimbursement in exchange for X amount of yrs in a certain setting.. indian reservations, etc.
that really doesn't have anything to do with deferment, though
I begin my OT program this fall. I have been anxious and excited since finding out my acceptance in Feb. The issue of my program allowing me to possibly defer in this situation is yet to be determined, for mine and their attempts at correspondence have resulted in only missed connections, with them saying that I have "a number of options" in deferring--whatever that actually means.
I currently work as a nanny for a wonderful family who is in the midst of building a house in another state and plans on moving there in the spring of 09'.
The family offered me the first year of my tuition in addition to my current pay to see if I would defer for one year in order to stay with them until they move.
My tuition is almost 27,000 a yr. I consider myself a pretty frugile girl and coming from a rather low socioeconomic background, this offer is tempting.
I am twenty-five yrs old, single with no children. The three yrs spent in the program + the cost of living does turn my stomach quite a bit.
It all depends on the programs say, before I can actually truly consider this, for I do not want to risk not being accepted again, etc.
I do have to weigh losing a year of an OT salary to my current nanny salary, which is close to the bonus that I would receive to stay. I just worry about the time it will take to pay off the 27000 to begin with.
I know that my future is full of pb&j sandwiches, but I would love to soften the blow a bit.
