Not 100% sure but I believe there's mandatory attendance for lectures at TCU which I'm not sure how you value that but something else to consider!

As a current MS1 at TCU, I can say the school has a TON of amazing clinical affiliates. We rotate through Baylor Scott & White, JPS, Texas Methodist Health, and many others.

We also have a residency program affiliated with the Med School at Baylor Scott & White with several specialties. They are also working on another residency program with JPS last they've said.

MS1s are in clinic/hospital bi-monthly and MS2s are there nearly exclusively. If your worries with TCU is that they will not have enough affiliate locations for students, boy do I have news for you... That is one of the biggest strengths of the school. Feel free to PM me with questions.

I would normally agree with the known entity, but being from CA, maybe you would just do better in the warmer weather in Texas since so much of Med school is the effort you put in. They have more affiliated clinical sites and for moderate competitive specialties Cali people generally match back. Midwest winters are cold! Residency interviews are regional at least Texas opens up some warmer locales for residency and surrounding ( Colorado, New Mexico, etc). For Kentucky you are looking at the Midwest region and a lot of cold.

Of course weather is a big factor for me, but I do place a high importance on a school already having full accreditation, prior students to look up to and get advice from, along with match lists to observe. Looking at previous years' match lists at Louisville, it seems that people are matching back to places in CA.

Agreed. Actually factored into my decisions amongst my Med schools. You can match back into cal from anywhere, it is just a bit more difficult. Some of the clinical sites at the Texas school are uncharacteristically strong and have great reputations, residencies. JPS has a few schools rotate through (DO North Texas). I think it will be less new in terms of having upperclassmen to speak with (input from classes one and two years above you most valuable) but will not have the alumni network or benefit of being a known entity that residency PDs are familiar with. Letters will be know since students have been rotating through from other schools. If you 100% are going to try to match back to Cali would pick the known entity for reputation reach, but often times this is not the case and you end up near to the region you did Med school in since Cali is so competitive and students from all over wish to return and for competitive specialities not always feasible. In that case, the nearby regions of Colorado, New Mexico, Texas seem much better than Kentucky/ Ohio. School reputation. Location and weather are important for your productivity/ happiness, but if you can be OK with Kentucky/ Louisville and want the reputed benefits of a known entity, Med school is definitely what you put into it and can do well with either and match back to Cali! GL
