i would personally recommend preparing for exam right after your ochem courses
im 4th year undergrad in UC and i have been taking summer session classes all the time except freshman year. and im regretting it
i wish i could have started studying DAT earlier possibly after 2nd, or 3rd year.
i am much more motivated right now but lack of time 🙁
if you deicide to take summer courses, just focus on them and possibly study next year

this is popular dat schedule made by dentalworks (6 or 8 weeks programs depends on your background knowledge)
i recommend you to follow Chad video version of this schedule when you are studying!
good luck!

UCD haha
i had really weak backgrounds on ochem, okay about gc and bio
before i started studying i cant even do ochem really well but ironically now, ochem is my highest scoring area on science sections. everything is doable in my opinion
and all the courses i took so far, microbiology, evolution, molecular cellular biology, etc all helped me for biology sections but still biology is my weakest area..
do not worry about background, i think DAT asks really general questions (not too much in-depth)
so you will be good to go as long as you study and have some high school level background of chemistry, biology and math.

Chads video for GC, OC
cliffs Ap biology for bio
Crack DAT PAT for PAT
Destroyer for all science and math
will be must prep materials you should get!

hope this helps!

The biggest help a year before the DAT is to pay attention in class. Make sure you understand the material. That way when your get ready for the DAT you are reveiwing, not learning.

Start reading either Campbell's or Cliff's now and just soak it up throughout the year. Chad's is a great way to get started on Chem and OChem. Starting doing a little bit of PAT if you can. Master cube counting and hole punching because you really can with a lot of practice. The summer of the DAT, I would make it your full-time job. Unless you're really good at balancing your life which I am not. You should be off to a good start if you do that. But definitely don't slack in your classes, as they will be a huge help.

i would do a practice exam and familiarize yourself with strategies on tackling PAT QR RC and then read your kaplan book once or twice lightly. a very good insight to what you wil be doing next summer

+1.

If only a couple hours a week, you spent time doing crack DAT PAT, practice reading quickly, and doing math destroyer you will be in great shape. They're all things that dont really leave you and are best done by mastering them over a long period of time IMO.

It's hard to become good at reading, PAT, and math in a short amount of time because you dont really have any prereqs to prepare you for them.
