You have to take upper level classes for MSUCOM sepcifically, they have told people in the past they'd rather you take upper level than retakes. If you do retakes, just take a few upper levels.

Otherwise all schools are fine!

I am a sophomore at a state college right now and I really messed up my first two years of college due to a lot of family circumstances. Right now on my transcript I have two Fs, 1 Cs, and 2 Ds. I am retaking the two F's and 1 D right now and plan on retaking the C and other D this upcoming spring semester. I am worried this will greatly affect my application even though my GPA by the time I apply will probably be around a 3.5 if I only count the last repeat for the retaken courses (and granted I succeed from here on out with A's which I should be able to). My MCAT is a 33. I have a lot of extracurricular activities with over 100 hours of shadowing and 100 hours of volunteering, leadership positions around campus and also part of two research publications. I am also majoring in biochemistry with a minor. Will D.O schools look at my application and automatically reject it even if I have the 3.5 GPA because of all the retakes? Which schools should I apply to? Do I even have a chance at any of the 1st tier D.O schools like MSUCOM? Thanks!

3.5/33 is a good chance at 1st tier DO schools. If you can back up your initial struggles with personal problems in the family, I think you have a decent chance especially if that 33 is well balanced. Your ECs look fine. Good luck

First off there are no "tiers" of DO schools. Second, I redid 14 classes, the OP is fine.

Well he mentioned 1st tier DO so I was trying to refer to what he considers MSUCOM.

The whole purpose of grade replacement is to show that the you of now is not the you of then. Having a limit to retakes would defeat the entire purpose. You indeed have a great chance at any DO school, including mine.

You have to take upper level classes for MSUCOM specifically, they have told people in the past they'd rather you take upper level than retakes. If you do retakes, just take a few upper levels.

I remember someone emailed MSUCOM and asked them for feedback. This is what they pretty much said.

You're absolutely right.

There is more of a scale that ranges from "this school really sucks" to "this place is awesome".

I know some of the members who have already graduated say "Just go to the cheapest one." I interviewed at the cheapest one and left feeling like I had sold my soul.

Don't stress out. I think you'll do well at any school you apply to.

I disagree with Sylvanthus, there are top tier and lower tier schools.

If you don't mind me asking, which med schools were you accepted to?

I haven't applied yet. I am just referring to what the OP refers to as Tier 1. I personally don't believe in the Tier 1 DO rankings but I know MSUCOM is quite competitive so I felt if I could tell him he has a decent chance at MSUCOM, he does have a good chance at schools with highers such as Des Moines and CCOM. Not trying to come off as I know a lot about the application cycle, I am just trying to explain to the OP that I think he should have a decent chance with his numbers.
