You have time to improve things - before next application cycle, i think it would help your app to get 100 hours (minimum) of shadowing experience in general dentistry and possibly even a part-time job as a dental assistant (in general dent or a speciality). Focus on that and if you have extra time more research looks good as does a few dental-related volunteering experiences

Is there time to obtain a dental assistant license and then actually use it? The online programs I've been looking at appear to be almost a year, I've heard of people getting it much quicker than that and I'm wondering if maybe I'm looking in the wrong place.

Also for shadowing--I just moved to a new state and have no connections to any dentists here. I've seen people recommend simply going into a dental office and asking if I could shadow someone, is that the best way to go about it?

Im from michigan and i have assisting experience - i think in some states schooling isnt required? If it is for your state, then it would be upto you to decide if it was worth spending the money to learn all of the new things (but then ultimately not use your assisting skills). I know someone that did that and got into dental school. But first make sure ud actually need the schooling in ur state. Call local offices and they should be able to tell you. Also for shadowing, i just walked into offices and directly asked lol. You may need to spread out ur 100 hours at different offices cuz most offices will let you do 20-30 (in my own experience). But finding shadowing opportunities should not be hard at all! Also look for local dental events held at local dental schools or other places for volunteering opportunities (call to ask and they should provide more guidance on this). Hope this helps! 🙂

That would be okay! Ive known people who have shadowed within a short window of time. Is it general dentistry?
