What is the breakdown by hours of your 350 hours of non clinical volunteering?
I forgot to add my 2nd hospital volunteering, so it is 380 hours
Non-clinical volunteer at children's hematology/oncology hospital (many underserved or global services program patients where English is not first language) (60 hours) + maternal newborn unit (70 hours)
STEM volunteer at Boys and Girls Club (20 hours)
Clean-Ups and Blanket-Making for Unhoused populations (100)
Fundraising for underserved medical clinic in Liberia (150)

Pending your hours breakdown, the list geographically seems reasonable. What is your purpose and motivation as a physician?
Due to my interests in public health and environmental health, my purpose as a physician stems from my desire to provide care that is holistic and incorporates the wide breadth of environmental and life history factors that can impact health outcomes. Due to my interests in volunteering and science communication, I am deeply interested in social justice-oriented medicine, as well as optimizing medical communication for diverse patient populations so that medical/public health information is delivered in a manner that is accessible for all. My motivation stems from my own experiences with my childhood provider, who was a fantastic physician that supported me, was attentive to my needs, incorporated my cultural background into her care, and helped me grow into the person I am today. I hope to work in primary care in the future, and she serves as a role model and motivator for the kind of physician I want to be.

Is there a reason why DO is not on your list then?

Exactly what does this type of medicine look like, especially given the next few years with our federal funding and health care challenges (among many other things)? Where have you shadowed or worked where your ideal environment exists? Keep it real with your stats and preferences.

Service orientation: I disregard activities with fewer than 50 hours unless it's shadowing. Fundraising does not demonstrate service orientation (it's leadership because you have to convince people to give money to your cause). Non-clinical global services hospital volunteering is arguably clinical due to environment and circumstance. This leaves you with 100 hours of blanket-making and clean-up for unhoused shelters. Push yourself to get closer to 150 hours by the time you submit your application to avoid getting screened out at most schools. Your public health/epidemiology work could redeem you, so we'll see.
