just succumb to the nihilism your life gets easier

If the person was not engaged in an illegal act, you have no right to interfere with what they were doing. Your opinion counts for nothing in this case as you have no license and this isn't your patient. People have been shot for not minding their own business. Sure smoking is not healthy for anyone but in an open public area where it's allowed, you have no right to interfere.

Smoking while pregnant is not illegal. While stupid and unhealthy, it's not illegal and as such, the child in this case is the responsibility of the mother; not your respoinsibility. You can't protect people from themselves as I suspect that you do some things that are not the healthiest either. Perhaps you are the type to walk into a restaurant and tell any overweight person about eating too.

The OP is asking the opinions of other citizens about a moral dilemma. You are making harsh judgments about a person asking if it is OK to comment to a stranger about a person harming another human being. You are barking at this person while suggesting they do not mimic the same speech you are weilding. "Don't judge this person, but I will judge you AND tell you how bad you are just for considering it!" You cant "interfere" with people in public, you could be shot! Geesh.

OP: It is completely legal and justifiable to tell them that dangers exist to themselves and their child. However, I personally would not say anything to this person in a public situation because they likely already understand this information.

Wow, that newspaper editor is awesome.

Yeah, the mom is a *****, but it's not your business to comment or interfere if you aren't seeing her as a patient. Also, I'd like to point out that it's not like she is murdering the baby. The harms of smoking during pregnancy are well documented, but most babies still turn out just fine. Many of your grandmothers smoked heavily while your parents were in utero.
