I am a resident . I need a compatible system for uptodate download and other programs.
what do most residents use?
DO you prefer palm as opposed to pocket pc?
I am trying to get the best out there . Somehting which lets me organise my patients as well as drugs info and compatible with most textbooks out there like Harrisons , CMDT and ofcourse uptodate.

whats the difference between a pocket pc and and a mere Palm?

palms are faster/lighter/cheaper/easier to use/have more (free) programs available/work with mac - please use search function for more comparisons.

PPC menus are more difficult to navigate and most say they are not as quick and easy to run through as the Palms are. For someone wanting top notch I'd suggest the treo 700p/650 if you want phone/PDA combo or the T/X (LifeDrive isn't that great even with all the memory).

I'm not positive about uptodate on Palm however so if that's a big issue for you look into that first - I'm sure you could always copy paste into a word document though and sync that with your Palm.

I've used a Palm, HP, and Dell (the benefits of being the technology coordinator). I like the Dell best. The HP's I'm familiar with have not been very reliable; although I know people who really like it.

I don't think that's a fair characterization. I agree that Palms are easier to learn and use initially; but the tradeoff is that PocketPC's are much more powerful. New PocketPC devices (such as the Axim x50v and x51v) are incredibly fast, as well. Imho, if you wait to purchase during one of the "Dell's Days of Deals" promotions when Axims are typically reduced by over $100, they are the best deal out there for a top-quality PDA with an amazing screen, battery life, speed, etc.
