Basically, a judge granted a temporary restraining order to an obviously mentally-ill woman against David Letterman, then yesterday he lifted it. But WTF was he doing granting it in the first place?

In a legal document filed on Dec. 15, Nestler asked that Letterman be forced to stay at least three metres from her and not "think of me, and release me from his mental harassment and hammering."

Nestler said the problem started when she started sending him "thoughts of love" after the Late Show with David Letterman began airing on CBS in 1993.

She alleges that Letterman used code words, gestures and "eye expressions" to harass her and show his love for her through his TV program.

Nestler alleges that in one message, Letterman asked her to go to New York, where his show is taped, and become his co-star.

In another message, Nestler alleges that Letterman asked her to be his wife by saying "Marry me, Oprah." She said "Oprah" was one of the code names he used for her.

This woman, if it's the same one that Letterman has been talking about on his show, has had erotomanic delusions regarding him for quite some time. To our knowldege, she does not have nymphomanic delusions.

Judges are usually reasonable in hearing listening to psychiatrists for things such as TOO orders and in determining mental illness in cases such as this. Not sure how it could have slipped through. I'm not privy to the law issues, but it may be that judges grant restraining orders initially for safety's sake then they undergo review at a later time?

Nope, it's a different lady. From another article:

It is not the first time that Letterman has been the object of female fixation. A Connecticut woman, Margaret Mary Ray, was arrested several times for stalking the comedian over a five-year period.

Earlier this year, a former painter on Letterman's ranch in Montana was arrested on charges of plotting to kidnap Letterman's son and nanny. He was sentenced in September to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to lesser charges.

What is it about his personality that attracts these kinds of people?

Or, does this happen to all celebrities, but his stories are more often in the media?
