Hi all,

I was wondering what the "real" demographics (race, social status, etc.) are at the schools such as SGU, Ross, saba.......... For example, in undergrad studies (UC Irvine) you had your slackers, your fraternity dudes, your geeks, etc. I'm curious, is there a similar type of a situation out there? If you could describe the overall outlook and categorization of the class, it would be great!!!

Of course "slackers" are probably non-existent since it is med school, but still I reckon that there must be some kind of a gradient. And yes I know, this seems rather awkward and even stupid but hey it helps to know. Thanks!!!

Well LOL the slackers didn't get in in the USA so yea there are some here in the Caribbean, some make it through but others make the statistics of the ones who do not. There are some at my school, party party cram and bam the grades suck go figure. 😱

I am not at any of these schools yet, but it is easy to tell that you have these general types (and subtypes):

1) Older student who is changing careers
--a) With advanced degrees or health professional
--b) Worked in unrelated field (i.e. business or law)

2) "Young turks"** who grow up comfortably thanks to their parent's money and are only in medical school because they are pushed to make something of their slacker lives (or else they will be financially cut off).
--a) Those that wake up and work hard to become a good physician
--b) Those who lie cheat and steal to get through basic sciences but have difficulties with the Steps (1, 2 etc)
--c) Those that still slack and "decel" as long as the money is flowing from mom and dad.

3) The late 20 somethings who are tickling 30 and may have not made the best decisions during their university years and are now just good enough to be almost good enough for a US or Canadian medical school. These people usually have some extra undergrad work, a post-bac or maybe some graduate school under their belt along with work experience to fill in the gaps.

4) Small numbers of natural geniuses (i.e. Patch Adams) who apply, pass basic sciences with all A's, get 99 percentile on their steps and end up with excellent residencies. They are usually a bit older than the young turks but rarely older than the 40 something 'older' students mentioned earlier.
