Hello guys,

So I am a community college student doing pre-med, I applied for fall 2016 semester for my state university and was 100% sure I will get in, but yesterday I received my admission decision and was denied. I have a 4.0 GPA with hard science courses and strong EC's, such as volunteering abroad.
I don't know what to do now and haven't signed up for fall semester in my community college because I am running out of classes to take... I have considered leaving the whole medical school thing and go paramedic.
I am so devastated and hopeless because I have worked so hard.

I would like to hear your thoughts or suggestions, thank you. 🙁

Are there other 4 year schools you can apply to? I was always under the impression that there were multiple state schools available to CC students (provided you're not somewhere like Montana or something)?

You must have career counselors at your CC. If so, talk to them and see what they have to say.

If the State U isn't an option, what about the ___ State U. For example, If you can't get into IU in the Hoosier state, you can try ISU, Ball State or USI, off the top of my head.

What does the transfer program for your state specifically say? In my state, you're guaranteed to get in somewhere. Which pretty much means you may not get in where you want, even if you have the grades to get into said school.

That sucks. Did you only apply to one university? Depending on your state, there are some colleges that are still accepting applications and also some schools that accept Spring admits. Hurry and talk to a counselor and make sure you have all of the requirements for whatever school you apply to. Good luck.

Thank you all for the replays
I am from Maryland and all deadlines to other universities had passed, the counselors at my community college are not really helpful...

Apply to UMBC or look at schools in the city.

@Lone Droid If you are interested in moving west, apply to Arizona State University! Great premed community, amazing weather (if you like the heat), and tons of research opportunities! (This is coming from an in-state community college student)

Can't pay out of state tuition 🙁

Are you a Sophomore or Junior transfer?

What is your major?

What is your budget range?

Why on earth would you give up on medical school because you didn't make it into your 4-year undergraduate institute of choice? Undergraduate colleges usually don't screen too thoroughly, unless you are applying to an Ivy League school or something of that nature. Just go to another school. It doesn't matter as long as you earn that bachelors.

dude don't give up

how many years did you go at CC?

if you've already gone 2, maybe go one more semester and see if any of your schools offer spring admission

also, if you feel confident in yourself (and if you want to spend the money), maybe apply to some private schools around the country

Maryland has a funding problem, don't take it personally. Don't give up. It seems like most states have funding problems lately.

There are literally 14 public 4-year universities in Maryland at a range of price points, but all much cheaper than a private college. Which one did you get rejected from? Try UMUC, maybe. It is the largest. Or try UM College Park, although I have an inkling that is where you got rejected (I think that is the flagship location). 11 of the 4-year public schools are grouped together in the University System of Maryland, and then there are 3 independent public colleges.

Remember that these schools are subsidized by tax dollars and the state legislature decides things like which majors are most important, so they are not rejecting you on your merits as an applicant. It's July, so it's too late to try for private colleges this year. But next year you could try for private colleges and see if you get financial aid. Don't rule out private colleges without seeing the aid offers.

I tried college park and got rejected, all the other colleges except UMBC are pretty bad. UMBC does not offer the major I want... But they do offer something called emergency medical services, which is basically a paramedic.. will I be able to get into med school with this major?

What major do you want to pursue? The EMS program is likely a certificate based program and would not be eligible.

A premed cannot go to UMUC, the prerequisite are not available there. UMDCP is the worst at financial aid and the worst at acceptances, so probably is where he got rejection from.

Best bet if you need to stay in MD would probably be Bowie State, UMES, or Towson.

Also, PMed you.

Edit: OP responded about CP, got it.

No no no do not do this! Even the paramedic degree programs are not useful in admissions. Get a degree in something else that you're interested in and can do well in and take the prerequisite classes.

Yeah, I suspected the College Park location was the one you really wanted, that's unfortunate.

I didn't know that UMUC doesn't offer the correct prerequisites. I feel like maybe it is better than community college, though. Maybe just one year at UMUC. They are very large, I feel like they probably are less selective. You worried that you are running out of classes at the community college, so that speaks in favor of going to UMUC for at least a year.

As stated by others, there are a bunch of public 4-year private colleges and universities.

I would advise a major in something you are passionate about and that you think you can get high grades in. I would worry less about whether it is medicine-related, because an EMT or pharmacy prep program is not necessarily the best. Do chemistry if you love chemistry, or if you can tolerate it for a few years. Form bonds with faculty. And then yes, also take the premed requirements.

UMUC has a 100% acceptance rate, I feel like nothing good will come out of this... I am not eligible for financial aid, can't pay out of state tuition, and not eligible to take student loans (for reasons I will not describe due to privacy).
I appreciate all your help, I decided to take another semester in community college and if I won't get accepted again, I have no other choice but to quit 🙁 , I also have 0 chemistry classes because chemistry classes are located in a campus far from me (and I don't have a car and public transportation not available to get there).
I might just end my life

Just going to throw this in there, I have been in EMS for 12 years, I would not recommend going for paramedic just to get into medical school, it is a long journey, and ultimately you have to have the drive to work in this industry, low pay, long hours, and a lot of nonsense. I do not regret becoming a paramedic in the least, in fact it was this and my medical director that has pushed me towards going to medical school. The experiences have certainly helped me learn, mature and tempered my attitude and given me the drive to push for my goals. However, if you are looking at it as a sole career, I can tell you that because of the pay and conditions, it is hard on your body physically and will require a lot of hours to make ends meet, many medics go on to RN, PA, med school etc, or get out. If you are looking for something to gain experience and get your feet wet so to speak, you can do an EMT-B course and either volunteer or work PRN as an EMT for the experiences while you work on college. As many others have stated, keep trying to apply and find a subject you enjoy and do well, this will ultimately help you the most as far as medical school is concerned.

I might just end my life

It wouldn't be SDN without a weekly threat of suicide over a minor setback in undergrad...

You really need to reevaluate your situation. Maybe take some time off from school, get your affairs in order, and talk to a professional. Saying you want to kill yourself isn't funny.
