As we join our scene, it just came out yesterday that my hospital system will "wind down" for closure in the next 4 weeks. There are two hospitals, with one being urban (more or less) and the other busier, and suburban (more or less). The first one is a surgical center, and the only place in a 5000 mile diameter (which outs me) doing transplants.

For history, several years ago, the health system declared bankruptcy and sold off the hospitals, sold the dialysis unit ($$$$ lost), and kept community medicine/palliative care, along with doctors' offices. There were ups and downs, with the hospitals coming out of bankruptcy, then going back in. There was a plan for the health system (owned by an order of Catholic nuns) to buy back the hospitals. At the last minute, the nuns backed out (in the statement issued by the CEO nun, there was a line stating "after...much prayer" - I was wondering when Jesus opened the heavens and said "show me the money!"), and we were searching for a buyer.

Flash forward to this week - a buyer made an offer. However, a villain reappears (such as they are) - the nuns kiboshed the deal. I had said that the nuns would have a PR disaster if they squashed a deal, which I could only see is if the buyer was Planned Parenthood or an abortion provider. However, this time, it was because they felt that other, less deserving junior creditors would get paid, when the nuns felt they should get all the money, so the nuns said "our slice of the pie isn't big enough, so no one gets any!"

So, right now, both hospitals are on permanent divert, and I am probably working my last shift there tonight! I am wondering what I can sneak out under cover of darkness, stealthily stashing in my car. At the same time, I am wondering what is worth taking from an emergency department.

So, beware! It CAN happen to YOU!

Wow! Sorry to hear that. Often these negotiations go down to the wire or past the wire because one side or the other is playing chicken and then everyone steps up and gets it fixed. Good luck.

I was wondering about all that - to the wire or past. One (or THE) sticking point was that the nuns are owed about $40 million, but the buyers were offering $25 million, and the nuns would get a little more than $11 million - which isn't enough for them, but the buyers said that the hospitals aren't worth $40 million.

I know where you work and have had friends who worked there. sorry to hear about this. my understanding is that your place is a significant resource for your local community and there isn't much else around to fill in the gap.
best of luck my friend.

I would take an ultrasound.

You could be kind of like that lady from the sonosite commercial!

I stopped in tonight. ED is locked down tight - doors closed and lights out. However, the med/surg floor, tele, and the unit still have patients, along with the SNF. The Sonosite is in the unit's posession (they have 3 vascular probes - two of them which I have NEVER seen). It would take some stealth. At the same time, one of the security guards said I should come back in, wearing my white coat, and just walk around like I belonged there, just to screw with them.

As it is, I looked like a vagrant when I came in, but they still ID'd me!

I'm sure you're just joking about stealing equipment from your former employer, Apollyon, as I imagine you're well aware that grand larceny is a felony, and a felony conviction would severely limit your future employment options in the medical field.

Yes, wet blanket, it is all joking. In 2 years, I could have cleaned the place out. I didn't. It is a classic element of American humor about taking stuff when a person leaves or the business shuts down. The more bulky or unique makes it more amusing (what would someone do with a pair of Magill forceps?).

Oh, and, of course, I would write about it on SDN.
