Can someone please tell me what are the ins and outs of the denistry profession. I became interested in dentistry because I went to get my wisdom teeth out and found it very interesting and how I would like to be a dentist but not a dental surgeon. Do I have to have a bachelor's degree before I apply? I know I have to take the DAT. How long do dentist go to school? These are just a few things that I want to know and whatever you can tell me about the profession.

I'm not sure if we can tell you the ins and outs of dentistry since most of us are not yet in the profession 😉
However, it's a great career field to get into! You get to help people out, work in a stable job, and you can live comfortably.

Yes, you need to get a bachelor's degree before you get into dental school. However, there are joint bachelors-DMD/DDS degree programs that you apply for during high school at the same time as your college applications (it sounds like you're still in high school?). These are competitive programs where you do like 3 or so years of undergrad, I believe, and then you go to the partnering dental school (you still have to take the DAT and maintain a good GPA). You might not get into them, but then you can just go the typical route of getting a bachelors degree and then apply to dental school. Dental school on its own is 4 years just to become a general dentist. If you want to specialize, then that's a couple more years of school on top of that.

Hope that helps a little! Good luck 🙂

Make sure you start shadowing to know that it's what you really want to do. That's the best way to find out the "ins and outs" of dentistry by talking to dentists.

You don't need a bachelor's degree for all dental schools. A lot of schools don't require a bachelor's but they highly recommend it. I have a few friends that got into dental school without a bachelor's and it wasn't because they participated in these bachelors-DMD/DDS programs. It's very rare for this to happen, but if you're very disciplined in undergrad by doing great in your academics (3.7+), have a 20+ on the DAT, do a lot of shadowing and volunteer work, participate in clubs and activities you could get in without completing a bachelor's degree. If you want to do this, you definitely need to look at dental school websites to distinguish which schools you are able to apply to without completing a bachelors.
