So I am in kind of a dilemma at the moment. This dentist that I have recently spoken to has allowed me to work as a dental assistant in her private practice, however, I do not have any sort of certification that would allow me to work as an assistant.

I am not sure what to do as I spoke with some friends and they told me that this is probably a scam because I have no experience and she's allowing me to work as a dental assistant while performing all the duties a dental assistant would. What would you do if you were in my shoes?

Does your state require that all dental assistants be certified? Some states don't. I worked in NY as a DA. The only way to learn is to be thrown right in.

Wait! She is willing to hire you to function as a "quasi" DA and you are the one being scammed?

IF your state doesn't require a DA certification, the you are lucky to get offered this and should jump on it. I feel like not very many dentists are open to training.

In TX at least you can work as a DA without doing xrays.

The time and patience that this dentist is offering is a great opportunity for you. This is unlike the typical scam internships within the business realm. Now if you stayed there for years, that would most certainly be your loss, but as a transient student with overarching goals, this is a great way to become exposed to dentistry.
