Hey everyone. I was wondering if anyone had any dental research ideas?
I am in the process of applying for a summer program before dental school and they want to know "what I am interested in?"

Frankly, I don't really know because I haven't done research before, but I am interested in starting (not to be a "gunner" or get into a specialty) so that I can get to know the faculty and actually do some interesting stuff.

If anyone has any ideas, or even better, a list of possible topics, I am open completely.

Hi, Are you required to do that research ? you may think about relaxing this summer before hardest work starts. But I know it's personal preference.
GL.

it doesnt matter what you are interested in. your PI will have a project already going and you will just contribute to that. trying to do research in 3 summer months with no previous research experience, i really doubt you will be able to contribute anything. at best, you'll get to learn some lab techniques, which is always good to have.

i do suggest cell biology or genetics research. that is the future of medicine.

I suggest doing 'dry lab' work... Forget the assays and lab techniques. Look towards policy-making, clinical labs, and environmental scan-type projects...

what does dry lab mean? paperwork lab?

Your PI will pick what you do but you can pick your PI. I would go to whatever the school's website is and look at their research page. My interest is in biofilms and microbiology so I would check that out. Also try reading some JADA's. It'll help you know what you're getting into.

dry = clinical research......basically scanning papers, looking at graphs, taking surveys, "after taking this pill, how do you feel now, ma'am?" etc.
wet = bench research......pipetting, chemicals, the hardcore biochem/mol bio, a.k.a. the real research IMHO:laugh:

yea, so i suggest doing wet lab stuff.

Yeah, before I started research I was under the assumption that I had to come up with a project all on my own, but I was relieved when I found out that PI's already have projects to work on.

I work in a dental research lab and clinical stuff is always fun, but I do love working with my hamsters, haha!
