Hey everyone! I changed my name just to keep things confidential (and that's also why this is my only post) but I was looking for some advice and I hoped SDN could help. My sister is getting married on a Saturday and her wedding rehearsal is on the Thursday before the wedding. I am going to school in another state and would have to fly home after class on Thursday for the rehearsal but also miss class on Friday. The person who handles absences said that I cannot miss class for this and it would have to be an unexcused absence. I am the maid of honor and this is my only sibling. What would you do?

Talk to your professors if the staff person is not being reasonable.

Ok my problem is that they threatened my graduation. I haven't missed a day of class either.

They may talk tough, but the power actually lies with the individual professors of the classes/labs you will be missing. If they are ok with it, then go for it. I once missed an entire week and nobody said anything about it. I don’t think anyone even noticed and I graduated just fine.

you're telling me your school will not let you graduate for missing only one day of class? are schools really that strict?

Remember this when they begin calling you, asking for donations, after you graduate. Tell them to go to hell. That's ridiculous that they would threaten your graduation for one missed day, and your sibling's wedding at that. You are paying them a fortune. This pisses me off.

That's how I felt. Even if it's an empty threat it seemed a little bit over board. Who knows maybe I'm just dramatic.

Sometimes you have to play the CC game. Hopefully the conversation was over email. Email her back and CC the course director and the appropriate associate dean (not the dean of the school).

If it's that big of an issue, just catch a flight on Friday. You won't miss the wedding because it's on a Saturday anyway. I never understood rehearsals, I didn't have one and my wedding went was just fine 😛.

I hope it works out!

Unfortunately, I have gone to all of them including my dean. I guess I just have to choose between my family and school.
