  1. Pre-Dental
Hey guys, I'm planning on applying to dental schools this upcoming cycle and I needed a little help in making a list of schools to apply to. I'm a Texas resident with a 3.7 overall gpa and a 3.3 science gpa. My DAT score is a 20AA. My main issue is cost, so I've eliminated the super expensive schools like NYU, BU, Western, except for tufts. Since Texas schools are super competitive, I don't think I have the stats to get in so I'm hoping to rely on a couple of out of state schools instead. I want to narrow it down to 10 schools, including the 3 in-state schools if I can even though I understand I'll have a lower chance of getting in. Here's my list so far -

1) Texas schools (3 schools)
3) ASDOH
4) Tufts
5) Virgina commonwealth
6) Marquette university
7) Maryland school of dentistry
8) Louisville school of dentistry

On the more expensive side but still options:
9) Pittsburgh
10) Michigan
11) Midwestern - Illinois

Please give me any suggestions you have. Thanks a bunch! 🙂

What other criteria are you basing your list on, other than cost? I don't have doc toothache's spreadsheet right in front of me, but if I recall correctly those are all schools that tend to accept a reasonable amount of OOS students. Eliminating the big private schools from your list certainly lowers your chances, but you know that. You might want to consider adding Buffalo to your list if cost is a big factor for you - they have decent OOS percentages and you can get in state tuition after D1.

As for ASDOH, be aware they value community service / involvement heavily, probably equally as much as DAT/GPA. No one knows for sure what # of community service hours is sufficient, but I've heard 1,000 hours get kicked around before. I didn't have nearly that much community service and still got an interview, though I did have a community-based employment that I devoted a lot of hours towards and wrote about extensively in my secondaries. I think it's also worth nothing that even if you do get an interview here, the post-interview acceptance rate for OOS students is one of the lowest I've seen (less than 25%, I dont remember the exact number).

I agree with free. ASdOH might be an aimless shot, given that you need tons of community service hours. I know Creighton takes a decent amount of OOS, so you might want to consider it. If I were you I would include schools such as NOVA or LECOM which are private as well. Remember that is costly to apply , but 5k mean nothing compared to not getting into dental school. Good luck. I'm applying this cycle as well and I have a 21 school list. It stinks. But I've been working on going to dental school for 6 years already.

I don't think you would really consider Pittsburgh to be on the expensive side. If you look at jts figure for average cost of attending, it has a ridiculous estimate for cost of living alone. You can pretty much disregard that and see the total cost drop.
