Rather interesting, I was discussing about dental school and licensing. Some of my friends said we do need a license to see patients in the clinic while in dental school while others disagreed. Hence, I was wondering if dental students in 3rd-4rth year require a license to see patients in clinic or do they get their license once they complete the dental school.

Thanks

No you do not have a license to see patients in dental school. No you do not simply get your license once you complete dental school. You have to pass numerous exams to get your state dental license.

As a student at the dental school, all your work is reviewed by faculty who have dental licenses. But rarely do they use their own license at the dental school. Instead - a dental school covers all the faculty and students for work they do.

The amount of supervision by dental school faculty varies, depending on the school, procedure, student and faculty preference.

All your work is covered by the licenses of your attendings. Every time you do a procedure they need to sign their name that they've reviewed it. Essentially they are taking responsibility for the final product, to some degree.

Ok Thanks that's exactly what I thought. But after you take your boards (part 1 and part 2) do you still need to take a state exam for your license even if you graduated from a school in the same state.

Yes you need to pass the NBDE part I and II, plus whatever licensing exam is required for your state (WREB, NERB, etc).

this with asterisk that some states require a residency or give you the option of a residency over some of these exams. you will have to look up each state's board of dentistry to know the rules for that particular state, and it seems like the rules keep changing.

Oh ok. So are there states that absolutely require you to have a residency otherwise you cannot practice in that state.

Yes, NY to name one. You would have to work for 5 years (I think) elsewhere before you can move to NY if you do not take a residency.
