Hi All...

I'm new to this forum. I have been browsing for a while and finally decided to post. I was going through the Podiatry forum and noticed that many were very against the profession...regretting even getting into the field and now trying to get into medical school.

I was wondering if any students or dentists on here regret going into this field? If so, why? Also, what are the pros/cons of this field? I have spoken to some dentists who seem to love the profession and have also heard about some students who were in Medical School that ended up going to dental school.

Any thoughts?

I'll answer part of your question. Podiatry is nothing like dentistry. Dentist are in high demand and earn a good salary after graduation. Pods........, well you already said you read their forum. Also I think dentists are a more cohesive bunch. Also I think being a dentist opens up a lot more windows, different specialties, and all sorts of various business opportunities.

Yup, dentistry does have A LOT to offer, as speter said. However, I know people who tremendously hate dentistry. The fact of this matter is (oh boy, Tufts guys will hear your oral health promotion prof say that a lot) that these people that I know went to dental school because they didn't get into med school. Wanted to something in health care, and somehow got into dental school. As critical as the adcoms are, they still let these select few people into the profession. I guess it's because there is a success rate of converting the premed to dental.

Sadly, these people who are miserable sorely hate the profession enough to make me wonder if they'd even be capable of enduring med school (the choice they intended to pursue). They complain about the classes, complain about lab work, complain about the effort required. *shrug*

For some pros/cons

Others can be searched. Many threads on them.

To the OP:

in answer to your wonderings about dentistry in regards to the light that podiatrists/pod students see their profession in, the two are completely different. You will find people who dislike dentistry, but not nearly to the degree that it seems to permeate the podiatry profession.

There are going to be unhappy people in any career. In fact, the vast majority of people are stuck doing jobs they just kind of "fell into." They needed work and that's what was available. Whether they are happy or not is a moot point - they have to work.

Most of us on these boards, however, are in the enviable position of having the intellect and opportunity to pursue ANY career path we choose. I could quit dental school tomorrow and choose instead to become an engineer, a college professor, a physician, or a garbageman. There are honestly very few careers that are out of reach for most of us. That is the case for only a very small percentage of the population. We have an opportunity afforded only a select few in the history of the world - that of choosing any vocation we desire. By all means take advantage of your good fortune and choose something that will make YOU happy.
