Is there a way to get dental experience other than shadowing as an undergrad? The only thing I have found is volunteering as an administrative assistant in my university's dental clinic.

Assisting wherever possible, attending dental related events (Hinman in Atlanta, ASDA events, pre-dental days in dental schools) membership in university pre-dental club, waxing classes, Coursera dental related courses with certificates, missions abroad... There is a lot to do if you look.

It's my personal opinion that an applicant should have *some* additional dental experience besides shadowing.

I volunteered for Give kids a Smile at my local dental school for a few years. I only live about 35-40 minutes from UTSD so the travel wasn't too far.
If you want something long term to do you could volunteer at a free dental clinic too.

If you're in your 1st or 2nd year of undergrad, I would encourage you to look into SMDEP. It's a fantastic program, looks great on applications, and you gain A LOT of experience. Plus, you make lifelong friends and have the opportunity to network with faculty at the dental school you go to.

SMDEP is open to students in their 1st or second year of college, so if you're graduating high school, you can apply for next summer's program. The application comes out each November, I believe.
