How hard is dentistry on the eyes? Do any of you suffer from eye strain? A worsening of vision?

I've read past posts saying that as long as you use loupes you will be fine. Was wondering if anyone can confirm this? I figure loupes will help prevent eye strain/damage, but is it one of those "it can still only do so much to help" situation?

I'm asking because one thing preventing me from going into dentistry is this concern. I have horrible myopia, astigmatism, and eye strain if I use the computer too long/study too long, etc. My opthamologist says that my eye health isn't that great. So eye health is something I have to keep in mind. I'd like your honest opinions.

Anyway, thanks in advance

No one has a response? 🙁

Okay I understand most people here aren't working dentists..

But for those of you who have spent a lot of time in lab and doing clinical work, have you experienced a lot of stress on your eyes or a deterioration of vision?

Thanks pals

I'll chime in. Obviously eye sight is very important in dentistry - maybe more important than dexterity.

If you think you will be unable to manage due to eyesight, or if you think your sight will worsen, than think carefully about your choice in careers.

That being said, I don't think it is normal for healthy eyesight to degrade from this kind of use.

Wearing loops is for your back more so than your eyes. Loops act like binoculars and allow you to keep a straight back and good posture and keep you from developing lower back problems. More dentists have to stop practicing over back problems than do over eye problems. The loops will reduce the eye strain some because they do magnify the working field but eye problems are not the majority of dental disabilities. If you get into dentistry just be sure that you can get a disability policy that covers you if your worsening eyesight make it impossible to practice and be sure to up the amount of coverage ever opportunity that you get (usually every 2-4 years)

I have been praticing for over 20 years-general dentistry.
Eye strain is not an issue. Back problems, neck problems, shoulder problems, hip. The key is to keep in shape(not that I am).

ive heard that there's an increased occurrence of eye cancer amongst dentists. not really sure how significant it was. nor do i have any sources.

My eyesight has actually improved since beginning dental school,. If this keeps up I won't need glasses by graduation!

Really tho, it's not much of an issue, IMHO. Get some loupes.

Forreeeaalls?
Do you have any idea why? Is it because you haven't been studying as much compared to undergrad? 😉

I notice that sometimes when I start to get back into drawing/sketching, my eyesight improves a little bit...😕

Dentistry really cause problems to eyes.
oh , it is very hard to return home with your eyes strained after long day working.
I also have Astigmatism and it works well
😀

Yeah it wasn't crazy drastic, but both eyes improved by .25 since my last check 2 yrs before. The studying is nearly the same as my last yr of undergrad. What helps IMO is taking frequent breaks from reading or sitting at the computer, and finding something distant to look at. This puts your eyes in their anatomical rest position; allowing the ciliary muscles to relax and the lens of your eye to flatten.
