Hey guys, I got a question. Say an acceptance comes with a deadline for deposit, but one still wants to check out other schools before making a decision....is there any way to get an extension?

I don't think so!

Here's what you should do. Identify your #1 school choice. Have you interviewed there yet? If so, I would hold off and find out when a decision would be made.

If you have not interviewed yet at your #1 choice, I would go ahead with the deposit at the other school. Meanwhile, call your #1 school and ask them when they will start interviews. If they have already started to interview, you can call them and tell them that you have been accepted to another school and request consideration. Explain to them that they are your #1 choice and that you were only using the other school as a backup plan.

Just a few weeks ago, I interviewed at my backup school first, but luckily interviewed at my #1 school a week later. I then got accepted to my backup school first. I proceeded to contact my #1 school and see exactly when a decision would be made and requested the results via email to save time. When the results came in, I was very happy!

It depends upon the school. I know for me, I was enrolled in my number one and was having some doubts. I was also accepted to my number two and they offered me money first. As I read the small print to this, it said that they accept more than they will actually take, and it was on a first come, first serve basis. I talked with my parents, because at this point i was really up in the air, and i also enrolled in this other school.
In the end, I ended up with my number one, and lost some money to the other, but the stress it relieved was enormous.
so just make sure that you not responding promptly wont hurt you in the future. I know you wouldnt want to make the final decision and then here, "sorry, we gave away your spot."
Good luck with everything!
