I am currently applying to a trove of residency programs like everyone else, but I was wondering if anyone can give me some suggestions of programs that train their residents particularly well in surgical procudures. I am interested in Mohs and, if I could choose any program, it would be one where residents get plenty of experience with Mohs and other procedures.

I've looked through pretty much every program website but thought that perhaps word-of-mouth would be helpful too. Thanks!

here's some advice: keep your lip zipped on the subject of derm surg on the interview trail. PDs do not like this. Initially I had heard this second hand, but then had a meeting with a top program PD, who told me that it's looked upon very poorly.

That said, there's no harm in seeking out progs that give good exposure. I've heard Miami is great for this. I've also heard that u only match there with a 270 step 1 and a phd.

Granted I don't speak from experience, but I would think that if you're interested in dermsurg/Mohs, you'll eventually seek out fellow training. So you'd look for a dermatology residency where you get a good med derm background to be a really well rounded dermatologist regardless of how you decide to specialize.

Mohs is a small community. You'd be set at any program that has an *actual* Mohs fellowship, not just faculty who perform Mohs.

we do a TON of mohs and have mohs fellowship. we get great surgical training, but if you want to become very good at lasers or injectables, it is not a good program.

I agree 100%, don't make it known that this is what you seek out, but you can certainly find out if programs have mohs fellowships, procedural fellowships, laser fellowships, cosmetics fellowships, etc, and focus your attention on those programs.

the main reason to do so is because most programs probably take their own residents for fellows, so it is good to have that inside track if you can.

Thanks for the input. I don't plan to announce to the programs where I interview that I am specifically looking for a program where exposure to surgery during residency is heavier; I just want to be sure that I apply to all such programs where this is the case. I had heard that some programs give residents more exposure to procedures than others but didn't know/realize that these were pretty much the programs that have Mohs fellowships.

Just curious: why is it so frowned upon to admit interest in derm surgery?
