In a journal, I recently read an article about an anthropological theory known as Dermatological Functionalism.

The theory asserted that all societal practices serve to maintain our physical appearance to prospective partners, and that this is an innate need of humans.

Since this theory directly relates to dermatology, I am curious as to dermatology students' thoughts on the issue. Do you give it any standing? I think it seems quite ridiculous; what do others think?

sounds reasonable. in a reductionist sense. if our purpose is to procreate, then being attractive will facilitate this goal. this is leaving out myriad other considerations, not to mention...wait a second, this is a derm applicant forum, not a philosophy class. forget i said anything.

Fair enough. I wasn't trying to turn this into a philosophy class or to digress from the topic at hand. I apologise if it looked like I was trying to do this. I just thought that dermatologists may be interested in dermatological functionalism, but I conceded in hindsight that perhaps this was the inappropriate forum in which to do so. Apologies for the digression.

Really? How long did they have to study and go to school to dream up that insanely obvious line of BS? Of course (those who care) try to look better for reasons relating to others' perceptions of them. If it were a strong motivator, we would not have the number of frankly fat and ugly anti-pheromone anti-lust bodies waddling the streets that we have today....
