I did not match into Derm. Many derm docs advertise for Dermatology Physician Assistant PA's to do much of their procedures. I'll be a licensed physician, but not board certified.

My Questions: Could a derm doc hire me instead of a PA? Is s/he restricted to only hiring PA's as Dermatology Assistants.?


Bottom line is that I want to be happy in my career and not just be a doctor for the sake of being a doctor.

no reason you couldn't train in FP, take some extra derm rotations/ courses and do some derm in your fp practice.
certainly not MOHS but lots of FPs do biopsies, cosmetic derm, etc

You could do anything you want as a licensed physician. Hospitals will limit what procedures you are credentialed to do in house. Outpatient; anything goes. I know FPs who do botox, cosmetics, fillers, etc. One of my med school buddy's father did 3 years of general surgery and now owns a huge med spa that rivals many dermatologist in town.

It all depends on your comfort level and how you will deal with potential complications. If you're a psychiatrist and you botch a laser procedure; you better have good lawyer.
