I'm reviewing for the DAT and I was wondering could anybody explain exactly what descriptive chemistry is? I have googled, wikipedia, and SDN this and I really don't have an exact topic that I need to review. Descriptive Chemistry is a topic that is listed in the Test Specifications for the DAT.

I was kind of confused on this as well. My AP Chem book has a descriptive chemistry chapter, which basically consists of writing net ionic equations and rules regarding translating words into equations.

Some (simple) examples:
"Hydrogen gas is burned in air." Translates into "H2 +O2 --> H2O"
"Solid calcium carbonate is heated." Translates to "CaCO3 --> CaO + CO2"

The book, in case you're interested, is Cracking the AP Chemistry Exam by Princeton Review.

bumping this. .

does anyone have a better idea now of what exactly descriptive chem is? is there a section in kaplan bb for this? i'm having trouble finding where it is. thanks!

I believe that its the periodic trends including electronegativity, ionization energy, atomic radius, metallic character, and electron affinity. types of bonding etc.
