Hi,
I am in an unusual situation. I was given an early acceptance to a DO school. I have 5 days to make my decision on whether I want to keep my spot there. I took the MCAT and received a 512 MCAT and 3.7 GPA (white, NY). I fell inlove with an MD school with a median MCAT of 512. I have seen the stats online, I know I have a somewhat good chance of getting a seat but it really feels like everybody gets a 512 nowadays. As if my score isn't impressive/competitive as it seems. I'm worried that I won't become a doctor, ~60% of applicants don't even get into 1 medical school, am I pushing my luck? I do plan on applying to DO schools and MD schools widely. I have research (at the med school I am inlove with) and I have many leadership positions at my university. My university is fairly no-named (also an area of concern). I graduated a year early (if that matters). If anyone can give me advice (Really anybody/everybody), I would be eternally grateful. What would you do in my position? Will I be penalized for backing out of an early acceptance med program? Is a bird in the hand worth it? Please help.

Does the DO pre-accept forbid you applying out/you forfeit the seat if you apply?

How would you feel about a different MD school than the one you are in love with, is that still preferable to the DO?

What are your career/specialty goals?

Is this one of the very established / best DO schools or is it a newer or less competitive one?

And, is this DO a much preferred option to other DO schools? It's hard to tell a 3.7/512 they're certain to get an MD seat, it's very likely but not a guarantee. But the odds of getting other DO offers with a 3.7/512 are a much more sure bet. If you ended up with no MD offers and alternative DO offers, would you feel it had been worth it to know you'd tried?

Now it's not about score but your ECs or other things such as LOR?
Just according to STATs, you have a good chance, but application is not only about stats.
Also, you are late for this cycle. Unless you can try next cycle, I don't think you could get a chance for now.

Thank you! I am going to try for next cycle anyways.

Yes, applying out wouldn't be okay. Those are fantastic questions for me to look over. I appreciate your input. It's an older DO school but I guess I would take another DO school. Maybe you're right. That was incredibly helpful.

You owe it to yourself to give MD an honest shot. When you go through the match you will thank the stars that you made that decision, and honestly it really won't hurt because I can practically guarantee you another DO seat somewhere with those stats. Unless you absolutely have this burning need to accept the early DO school then give the next cycle all you've got. A 3.7/512 has a good chanc at a lot of solid MD schools.

Apply out no doubt!

You'll get into many DO programs if you keep up your progress and hopefully a few MDs.

Roughly 12% of test takers have a 512. It's an impressive score. You're spending too much time on SDN haha. SDN is not a representative sample of the total applicant pool
IIRC a white 3.7/32 falls in the bin with like 50-something % odds? It's impressive vs the pool of MCAT test takers, but the yardstick to use here is white admits

Edit: checked and it's actually in low 60s!

Thank you all for reassuring me. I think you are all right and I do think I am going to apply out. This confidence has genuinely been helpful. Thank you again for the help!

Your MCAT score is the 88th percentile. You're more than competitive for most SUNYs (yes yes, I know their medians are 512 on MSAR etc., except sbu and ds). You will have no trouble earning admission to an MD school this cycle. SDN is a very biased and small community; only here will everyone post on low-tier MD forums "522 mcat, WAMC here at garbage MD school??" Don't let that fool you.

Not to be a jerk, but while I understand you have an early acceptance to a DO school, does that mean you've applied to said school last cycle (2016-2017)? If so, you shouldn't have applied to a school you're unwilling to attend. Not only is that a waste of your money, but this DO school spent time, energy, and money interviewing you when there was another candidate out there who is drooling about that school. If you are reapplying, I encourage you to only apply to schools you would attend: as in, if there's an MD school you hate, but you're 512 makes you a slam dunk there, don't apply. Same goes for DO. Let this be a lesson.

I was accepted out of highschool @dr.stalker. I realized 4 years later that this school was not for me. I fell inlove with a specific MD school after doing research there. Youre absolutely right, I need to take SDN WAMC's with a grain of salt. I appreciate that.

ah eek. that's why I had that qualifer; interesting, I didn't know someone could get auto-admitted post HS to DO school. At my hometown, we have a powerhouse DO school. My friends from HS did the BS/DO program there; is that similar to your situation? Like you did ug there and are admitted to the school, but you don't want to attend? Also, sorry if my post sounded harsh, I figured there was a possibility you were in a rather unique situation. SDN is a great resource, but also, paranoia inducing in the odd species known as "the pre-med." You'll be fine.

Haha yeah exactly, a BS/DO program. I realized I'm not really interested in the school, mostly because I didn't know anything about it. Just trying to opt out at this point but thanks a bunch!!!
