My dog has been super sick for the past two days. We took him to the Groomer on tuesday and then on Wednesday he began to vomit and developed diarrhea. Today he got worse, and he has begun to defecate with a lot of blood in his stool.

I can't really take him to the vet because of financial reasons but I don't know what to do!! Please give me some advice.

Have you checked to see if there is a local VCA around where you live? They generally have cheaper services, compared to regular vets.

I'm sorry to hear your pooch is sick!! = (

There is a few, thank you for recommending something less expensive. Do you have any tips for treating diarrhea at home?? I really have to avoid taking him somewhere, although I will if you guys think this is something absolutely serious! I just don't know.

I've heard from a doctor that I worked with that antacids might help. HOWEVER, you have to read the ingredients and make sure it doesn't include acetaminophen. I THINK aspirin is bad too... I do know that Pepto Bismol is a NO NO for your pet.

I really think you should seek advice from a professional... Good luck!

This board is not a site for medical advice.

To the OP, have your dog seen by a vet to get medical advice.

And I disagree with Assumption, VCA hospitals tend to be more expensive than "regular vets".

All I could recommend is a bland diet, like boiled burger with the fat poured off twice with some cooked white rice or the same just with chicken (with no fat). Withhold food for at least a day or until the vomiting stops, then slowly introduce a bland diet. Make sure to keep your pooch hydrated as hypovolemic shock is often times the badness associated with HGE. They get really dehydrated and their PCV shoots up over 60%.
It kinda sounds like a bad case of HGE, my dog had it and he was of IVF for a few days with antibiotics and then a bland diet. He ultimately got better but it took a few days.
I wish you luck, its a bummer you can't take your pooch to a vet.

I know people mean well by giving out advice but what if it isn't just vomiting/diarrhea? By giving out advice without an exam you could end up causing this animal a great deal of harm, as well as other animals whose owners browse the forums. You could accidentally give someone a way to mask symptoms of an bigger underlying problem: toxicity, pancreatitis, foreign body obstruction etc...
OP: You really need to take your dog in for a physical exam. Tell the vet finances are an issue, most will try to work with you but don't try and treat your dog on your own, and don't just take internet medical advice and run with it when you don't know exactly what's going on with your dog. I've seen too many well-meaning owners cause irreversible damage to their pets with "home cures".

I agree, the best option would be to go to the veterinarian and have a physical examination done, but I give the same advice I give to owners who call into the clinic and say that they can't come in for financial or other reasons: Bland Diet is all you really can do at home safely and ultimately their pets condition may or may not deteriorate. There aren't any OTC quick fixes especially for diarrhea which is hard to fix if your not treating the cause.

A bland diet is fine but you also gave out OTC medication dosages. Though most people on this forum hopefully know to be careful with home treatments that doesn't mean that everyone does and too often people try the cheap route in order to save money and it's the animal that suffers. Giving out medical dosages on a pubic forum is irresponsible and dangerous because you don't know the medical history and have no clue what could have caused this episode. Maybe it is just HGE but maybe it isn't. And if you can't afford a vet then ca the humane society or local shelter for a low cost referral.

thank you for the advice. I'm taking him to the hospital right now because this is scaring me =[

VCAs are generally MORE expensive than vets in private practice.

And I'm sorry to be the one to say it, but if you can't afford to bring your dog to a vet for a simple, everyday issue like diarrhea, you shouldn't be owning a dog. Pets are an expensive responsibility and not everyone is at a stage in their life to be able to handle that. What would you do if the dog got hit by a car tomorrow and needed thousands of dollars worth of medical care?

You were able to pay the groomer; this is more necessary and urgent. If you can't afford even a physical exam when your dog is "super sick," then you can't afford a pet. Try Care Credit if you can't pay right now.

Glad to hear you're taking him in. I hope it turns out to be something minor but definitely better safe than sorry. Good luck! :xf:
