Consider the following elementary steps; which would be the least likely to occur?

a) X + Y->Z
b) 2X + Y->Z
c) 2X + 2Y->W + Z
d) 2X->X + Y
e)2x + Y->2W + Z

Ans: C

They said with more reactants, there's less of a chance of collision leading to a "fruitful" reaction.

Could someone explain the reasoning behind this?

It's just a matter of probability. To react, reactants must come together in a certain way with a sufficient amount of energy. As you increase the number of reactants that must come together at the same time, the probability of that coming together decreases.

think of the mannic reaction from orgo where you have four reagents reacting...the yield wasnt that high! Basically the more reactants you have the lower the yield you will get

hope that helps 🙂

choice C is the only 4th order reaction

imagine kids with blindfolds running around on a playground. A successful reaction is only when the bonk heads so hard and directly they crack skulls. Imagine the probability of 2 kids doing this. Now compare that probability to 4 kids colliding at the exact same time in the correct orientation and hard enough that their skulls crack.

Now imagine that as a rusult of this unlikely event, playground running would be henceforth banned for everyone. communists.
