Hey guys can someone please explain to me why E is not true? I thought attenuated vaccines contain the live microbe but in a weakened form and they do illicit an immune response. Perhaps the part of the statement that's false is regarding the low concentration?

This is directly from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases' website: "Live, attenuated vaccines contain a version of the living microbe that has been weakened in the lab so it can’t cause disease. Because a live, attenuated vaccine is the closest thing to a natural infection, these vaccines are good “teachers” of the immune system: They elicit strong cellular and antibody responses and often confer lifelong immunity with only one or two doses."

Q: What is not true about a vaccine?
a) Many vaccines are made from killed or weakened pathogens
b) Vaccines may be made from toxic but inactivated by-products of dangerous organisms
such as bacteria
c) Vaccines represent strategies used to reduce risk of illness
d) Vaccines are given for diseases such as hepatitis, and can be made from viral
fragments
e) Attenuated viruses contain a low concentration of the pathogen and will illicit and
immune response.

Answer: E. An attenuated vaccine contains a version of the living microbe that has been weakened and modified in the lab. However the ability to induce protective immunity remains as virulence is lost.

Thanks!

very good question...hmmm..

i did some research i think the problem with that answer choice (E) is the fact that it states that it's pathogenic..(it says 'contains low concentration of the pathogen'). An attenuated virus is one that is nonpathigenic i.e. it will illicit an immune response by not causing a disease

An attenuated virus is one that has been weakened such that its capacity to produce a disease (pathogenicity) has been removed

can anyway correct me if im wrong?

Honestly to me it seems as though answer choice E and the explanation to it are the the same thing which makes really confusing

yeah I also contemplated if this was the answer, but I'm just not sure. 😕

Attenuated vaccines contain slightly alive microbes such as viruses but they have been weakened by heat or treatment. This makes it easier for the host's immune system to rid the microbe and create the immunological memory cells which will likely protect the patient in the future if and when confronted by a completely virulent microbe. The attenuated virus or microbe is NOT pathogenic (disease causing) unless the patient is immunodeficient.

There is a difference between low concentration of a virus and weakened virus.

Okay so I thought about this problem SO much because I've been through the DAT destroyer about four times now....and basically the reason that E is false is because an attenuated vaccine is just an injection of a genetically modified or 'weakened' version of the pathogen. In other words, scientists genetically removed the virulence from the bacteria, but since it still contains antigenic determinants, our bodies will recognize these antigens and produce antibodies against the bacteria. Now if you understand that, you can think about what E says, "a low concentration of the pathogen is injected". A low concentration of the pathogen means that the pathogen is STILL VIRULENT and still has the power to cause you sickness. Sometimes a low concentration of pathogen DOES work, but an attenuated vaccine does not work that way.
