On G chem 11. Its asking the hybridizationon the As.. the asnwer is dsp3. Ok. When can it be sp3d2? can someone explain the transition metal hybridization to me? how does that work? does it matter whether we write it with the d infront of the sp or after and is it going to be d2 in the 4th period or how does that work?
 
I agree its confusing, but the best way to explain is by looking at the "Derived Structures With nonbinding electron pairs on the central atom" chart if you can find one...

The structure of this molecule is: AX4E with a classification of, "Disturbed tetrahedron"

AX4E is derived from AX5 which is an elementary structure of sp3d named trigonal byipyramid. b/c AX5 is sp3d this means the derived structure has to be sp3d...
 
i see your'on aim.. i thought you would be online so i immed you. i had another question regarding this problem..
 
i think drawing it out is hard to do b/c the next example would be NH4+ which has 4 groups, but no electron pair.... making it sp3, tetrahedral i think....

oh wait! it says AsF4 MINUS... that explains, the extra pair bumps the sp3 to another group=> d not d2. sp3d2 means you'd have 6 not 5 groups on the central atom, As...
 
umm I thought it would be trignal pyramidal because its F4 with a lone pair.looking at wiki
