Hey guys, I just had a question how similar or harder is the Destroyer OC compared to the real DAT? Because my Orgo background needs a hell of a lot of upgrading based on the Destroyer problems. Is Destroyer simply an overkill of the real exam? Please provide feedback so I can put my nerves at rest lol.

its a great prep for the exam.. But the DAT ochem is much easier in my opinion. If you know destroyer you should do fine.

thanks for the reply Pauly. So if I know the road maps I should be well on my way?

I had a pretty good background with organic to start so I didn't really use the maps but going over them they do have the majority of reactions that you would need for the type of infor on the DAT. I would say yes if you know the reactions in destroyer and know how they work you should be fine. but some reaction in destroyer are overkill. I think there was a thread a week or so back about the iodoform rxn and the haloform test things like that, which are kinda of obscure. but overall know destroyer

I think destroyer Orgo is VERY close to DAT.... Maybe actual DAT is a tiny bit easier since most problems from the actual test don't have multiple reactions happening with 1 problem...

But I swear, my test had a few reactions I had NEVER seen before haha... I was actually expecting it to be my strongest score :/

Pauly and dentalWorks,

lol mixed feelings interesting I guess I have to get that much better at Orgo.. i'm currently in Orgo 2 but I dont believe its being taught at DAT level and speed so I think I need to master it myself.

In addition on the real DAT do you find questions such as "which one of these choice is false?" and then answer choice E is "all the above are true." I only ask because those tend to be hard and overkill but I dont know whether or not thats a format I would be asked in or if thats simply a Destroyer type question.

I loved DAT Destroyer's Orgo section, especially the roadmaps. In my experience, memorizing and understanding the mechanisms on the roadmaps will get you at least a 23. I went through DAT destroyer's orgo section three times, essentially relearning organic chem, and I ended up getting a 30 on that section (i couldn't believe my own eyes). It's doable!

wow Lane would you say the same thing for the Math Destroyer?

I'll follow this up as well, I had two reactions that I had never seen before but luckily I had a decent grasp on OC. To give you an idea of how I felt going into the DAT, I had worked through the destroyer OC about 4 times and could answer almost every question while understanding the mechanism. I also had the roadmaps altered to have blanks and I could fill all of those out from memory. Know those roadmaps & mechanisms like the back of your hand. Chad's review was also great as I had been out of OC for 2 years. I scored a 30 on OC so I was pretty happy! 😀

And no, I wouldn't say the same thing about Math Destroyer. Don't get me started.

I don't understand why people always talk about just learning the roadmaps. Its good if you want to shoot for an 18 I guess, but if you want to shoot for a 30 like many people out there, go through an orgo book. I went through my undergrad orgo book in a little under a week and everything made 1000x more sense. I didn't even have to memorize the roadmaps... I could look at it and know how to work my way through every reaction. I think this is a much better way to learn the stuff than just trying to remember which reactant goes where in the large circle of reactions you embedded into your memory.

DAT Orgo was much easier and different than Destroyer orgo, but destroyer was by far the best orgo prep. It shows you most things you'll see, just in a much more difficult form. You can go through destroyer orgo and get 2 right the first time through, but if you keep going through them and understand what you did wrong and then eventually get them all right even if it takes you 50 tries, you'll for sure get 20+ on DAT orgo.
