Destroyer OR #3 is the problem that asks you to compare 5 different fractions and see which one is the largest. It's a really easy problem and I used to cross multiplying method to figure it out.

But in the solutions, Dr. Romano says to eliminate fractions that are less than 1/2. I was wondering if there is a way to determine if a fraction like 13/27 is less than one half. Without actually dividing it out, I can't look at that fraction and tell that is less than 1/2.

Any suggestions?

Nevermind I found the answer, but in case anybody was curious I'll share:

if the numerator is less than half the denominator, then the fraction is less than 1/2

if the numerator is more than half the denominator, then the fraction is more than 1/2

Just be aware that some problems like that might have 5 fractions all under 1/2 so don't eliminate fractions under 1/2 until you see one that's above 1/2.
