Has anybody gotten an invitation in the mail from Detroit Mercy about a visit day? Is this like an interview; does it play any role in acceptance; is it important to go? Thanks.

I did for the Open house which i doubted that i'll go. I have class on Monday and it's on Sunday plus I am not from Detroit so I'll have to drive up there for atleast 8 hours. Is't important to go to the open houses??? I don't think it has anything to do with interview but then it's just my thoughts....

Yeah, I just got the same thing in mail today, OPEN HOUSE invitation.

"Open house invitation", if it is just that, I'm not spending another $350 to fly there, since I'll have to fly there again anyway if I get a real interview (their website says they do interview process like most schools).

I'll probably call them next week to make sure this is not an interview invitation. It's just strange that they put "school tour" + "admission process explanation" during open house.

it is not an interview invitation. it is an informational session/tour that is open to anyone who has applied or might be interested in applying. my pre-dental club all went to it last year. my thoughts are that going would show that you are interested in them and things and possibly help you get in, but not going would not actually hurt you. i am sure they understand that (especially for out of staters) some people can go but others may not be able to make it for various reasons.

I assume you all recieved that really wierd letter from UDM a couple of weeks ago? They sure have an interesting application/review process compared to most dental schools. Today I recieved a thin envelope from them, I almost though it was a rejection letter, but it turned out to be a reciept for my scondary fee I sent out over 3 months ago!

whats the track record with Detroit... for out of staters???

its a private school so instate/out of state probably isnt as much of a factor.

I'll be at the open house on Nov 14, anybody else gonna be there? I'm debating how formal of an occasion it is, and I'm leaning towards wearing a suit with no tie, does that sound about right?

i prob won't be going, but if i was, i would go with dress pants and a nice shirt or sweater. i don't think i would wear my suit. up to you, though.

Hey,
Well I'm not going since I went last year and it was very laid back. Some people were dressed nice, others had jeans on. This really has no affect on your application. This is open to high school students also, just anyone that is interested in the school.

I would suggest for anyone interested in attempting to come in and checkout the school. I did not go last year and was accepted, so it is not a requirement of acceptance. Attending will tell the school that you are interested in them more then other candidates and give you an advantage at interview because you already know a little about the UMD.

I would not suggest wearing jeans. You should wear tie, dress shirt and paints. Ask a lot of question of the students and faculty. Everyone that is there has volunteered and is willing to introduce you to the school.

I just got back from the open house. It was very informal, if you didn't go then you really didn't miss anything. The admissions director gave a lot of information out at the beginning but most of it was geared towards people who are either in high school or in college but have not applied yet. I couldn't find her afterwards, I think they really didn't want to be swarmed by a bunch of people wanting to know the status of their applications, but I did find out from students that the first interview date has been scheduled for mid-December. The cool part was getting to see the facilities, I havent been to more than a handful of dental schools, but they were probably the best ones I've seen yet. Everything was brand new and very state of the art, and I was very impressed. It seems like the students there are pretty happy too. Despite having a facility that was just opened in 1997, the whole university is moving to a yet to be determined location in the metro Detroit area in 2007. But overall, I was very impressed with the school and could definatley see myself fitting in there.
